Just a quick (possibly dumb) question. I want to get a Ford OEM AM/FM/CD head unit (1998-2002) from ebay for my '96 XLT. Before I do I need to know if OEM units can play CD-R disks? This info would really help me out if I should buy it. Thanks all...

ive got the oem 93 premium sound package (w/ cd) and cr-r's work in it. Not sure about newer ones though.

Thanks, "alexefron". I do think the newer ('98 - '02) units should be able to play CD-R disks but just want to be sure before I plunk down my money and get it. I know there's a lot of people out there with the Ford CD player in their Explorers, I just need a "yes" or "no" answer. C'mon people, help me out!

the factory AM/FM/Cass/CD head unit in my 2000 XLS plays CD-R's that I burnt myself. won't play CD-RW's though... oh, and i think you need to close the session on any CD's you burn. i don't think it will play a multi-session CD-R.

hope this helps.

Ok yes it will play cd-r. But probably not a cd-rw. Only difference between a cd-r and a cd-rw is that you can rewrite over a cd-rw. Once you close a cd-r (which you must do before it can be played) thats it. No more changes to the cd. And it probably best if you burn the cd-r at a slow speed, easier for stock cd players to read the cd.

You can put a '98-'01 CD/Cassette in your '96 but it's gonna be quite a few wiring involved. You also need to bypass the amp because your '96's amp is at the rear quarter panel while the dual media HU's amp is included in the unit.
