Well my rear brakes have sucked for a while now. I have been able to tell that my E-brake has been easier to set and, well, now my rear brakes are make some awful noise while I drive. So I was told I need some new shoes. Does anyone know where I can get them, and get them put on? I did a search but didn't find anything helpful. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Any auto parts store such as Autozone should have them, and most any mechanic should be able to do your brakes. Just be aware that many mechanics won't use customer supplied parts, they'll get the parts for you.

I couldn't find the shoes on autozone.com just the drum. Do have a rough extimate of what a mechanic would charge for parts and labor. I know it's different everywhere but a rough estimate would help.

Try calling Autozone, I've found their website often isn't very good.

Totally guessing on cost, but maybe $300 for a complete job in the rear?

just for shoes installed? I'm sure it's not an easy process but I'm broke :(

I said complete brake job, not just shoes.

oh okay, got ya. well I don't think I need a complete job, just shoes but I guess I'll have to check around. Thanks Alec.

P.S. Your X is AWESOME! I love the all black look.

Travis, just do the install yourself. Drums aren't difficult to mess with. Just make sure you have a picture (from manual or of your setup) before you start. Take your time and use the other side as a reference also. I would also advise getting a new brake spring kit at the same time.

edit: oh, and there are a couple of drum brake tools that will make the job a lot easier. I would think that they wouldn't cost more than like $10 at any auto store

i dont know about there but around here most shops will give you a free brake inspection and estimate. then just do the work yourself. brakes are relatively easy to do. and definately get a new spring kit they only cost a couple bucks.

You may need new drums also.

I had a problem on my X with the rear brakes. I have a 5.5 inch superlift kit and a stock parking brake. When the truck is on the lift it puts tension on the brake cable. When the brakes were adjusted they were not right. The brakes needed to be adjusted with the truck sitting on the ground, suspension under normal compression.

I would try using a can of Brake Cleaner first and see if the noise goes away. Unless you really don't have a clue on doing maintenance with your truck, this job is fairly easy to do. You'll kick yourself later on if you pay someone else to do something this easy.

Like what Robb said, do one side at time but use the other side as a template of how it should be put back.
