Now I'm wanting to get new tires for my 98, probably next spring.

I'm torn between these 2 tires and would like opinions from anyone who has owned a set.

i believe they are similarly priced, except that the Super Swampers i'll have to order over the internet while the Coopers i can through a local tire dealer

i haven't decided on size exactly, probably 235's in the coopers and 29x10.50r15 on the sts's.

so tell me what you think, looks, traction, wear, ride quality the whole sha-bang

Cooper ST!

I have cooper STT's- at over 10k miles, showing minimal wear, they make some noise, but they are MT's, ride and handle pretty good, do great offroad.

thanks for the post but i'm not looking into the MT's ;) they need to be more street-friendly and i like the ST's because they are an inbetween tread

Because I dont like the STS :D And I dont like the STS because they look like they're all looks and no play. The spacing between the lugs is just not enough. I think the BFG All-Terrains probably do a better job than the STS. Run the STS through some mud/snow and I think the spaces are going to be filled and the tire will have no traction.

The Cooper ST looks similar to the BFG All-Terrains (except with maybe more siping) so if this is true, then the Coopers are probably better.

Do understand that these are all-terrain tires and will probably not perform as well as their mud-terrain cousins.
BTW, if my memory serves me right, I think the moderator JamesT works for Cooper :D -- so he can probably tell you all about the ST.

yes i'm looking for an AT-oriented tire as i will be going with a stock size tire and i don't really off-road

I've seen the STS in the size i want and it really looks like a meaty tire with a good tread pattern

I've owned lug tires with decent space between the tread that have performed well in snow/ice conditions so i'm not concerned with this, also seeing the AWD does help

meanwhile the ST tread looks very promising as well, just wanted some opinions from guys running 1 or the other, perhaps haved used both, thanks for the comments though i like your opinions.

If road noise is a problem for you, stay as far away from the swamper sts as you can. They howl almost as loud as a bogger, you can hear them from a pretty far distance down the road. And i highly doubt they will last as long as the coopers, i've heard many people say they only lasted about 20,000 miles.

thanks for the input mounty

My nephew had a set of STS on his Darango, he got like 15,000 miles.

Jeez thats terrible.

well things are looking good for the Cooper ST so far

Also check out the Pro Comp line. They have some ties with Cooper and are good tires, especially their AT and AT Extreme.

Swampers are NOT street tires -- period.

Lots of guys run them there, but they are for off-road use. Just try balancing a set.

hey i'll look into the Pro Comps.

The STS is suppose to be a street-friendly tire, its an all-terrain Radial

but thanks for the input

Interco just came out with an all-terrain that really is street-friendly, it has a much more conventional tread than the sts, the tread pattern actually mimics the trxus m/t. And there might have even been a mileage guarantee for about 35,000 or 40,000 miles, IIRC.

I think they are 17" & up wheel sizes only.

If your looking for AT's look at the dick cepek FCII's. Those will be my next set of tires.

I ran those back in the day, when they were about the only thing out there besides "Gumbo Monster Mudders" and "Ground Hogs."

The FC tread patter is based on the old Goodyear snow tread. Very effective on snow and ice. Lots of edges to bite in, and they tend to run fairly quiet.

I still like the Pro Comps though, especially when they have a buy 3 get one free deal all the time.
