Need some tranny info/help

I have a 1994 Explorer XL 4x4. Had it out earlier today and was shifting fine, went to pick up my kids from school and when I got back in and started driving, I noticed delayed shifting out of first to the point where I had to let off the gas to let the rpm's down for the tranny to shift to second and on, kinda like driving a standard but having a "ghost" clutch and stick.


I stopped as soon as I could and the fluid was low, so I added Lucas transmission fix to bring it back up within the crosshatching on the dipstick.

The fluid did not smell burnt, it was a little dirty but nothing alarming, just typical of used fluid. The tranny will shift into drive and reverse fine, it just seems to be shifting through the driving range...

Anyone have any ideas because my mechanic just flew out today to take a course... ironically, I drove him to the airport this morning in the ex... lol... maybe this is just a temper tantrum?? lol

Soooo, after inspecting the vacuum line to the modulator, there is no tranny fluid present. What other problems could cause these symptoms?

dont quote me on this but seeing that i'm guessing here .....maybe the filter needs to be changed or it could be that a servo may be sticking .mine before it was rebuilt would delay going into reverse and had aproblem going into over drive ...it would but only after i got past 45-50 mph and shifted out of drive into neutral then back into drive going down the road ...sticking servo is what i was told was the cause of one of the 2 issues with it ...other than just being completlly wore out .


i'm sure someone here (maybe brooklynn man i think is very knowledgeable in this department)if not him then someone else)) can give you a better idea of possible causes.

Thanks for the reply Boggs I'm sure the tranny needs a complete service and would probably appreciate a complete rebuild, but it was apparently rebuilt 3.5 years ago so I would hope that a rebuild job would last a little longer than that, lol... In any case, I am betting that it wouldn't hurt to replace the servo's and the modulator even if they are not the offending parts.

Did you try to adjust the bands? It might be a broken or misadjusted band. The servos could be dried out as previously suggested or it could have a sticking governor. Does it do this at certain temperatures?
