Well, my wife and I just picked up her new (used) 2005 Ford Explorer Limited. The Chevy dealership only had one remote for it and one key. I know the new keys can be programmed as there is a section in the owners manual for it. However, we would like to have a spare remote control for the car and spare key. The vehicle also has a Ford remote starting system in it. Would programming the spare remote be any different?

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Lock your EX in the garage now! Somebody has the other key and remote at the dealership... I'm not joking, have the remote start disabled until you can get the keys! If the keys can be reprogrammed, take it to Ford and let them do it! (If it's financed, you might have to let the bank know you've changed the key and why, but have your insurance company back you up... but as of this moment in NJ, it's 10:35, do you know where your EX is

Seriously. I have a '05 Explorer, and they ALWAYS come with 2 Keys. Someone is either pulling your leg, or that dealership genuinely lost the key. Showing that they shouldn't be trusted in the first place.

The key and the door code...

They wouldn't have it on their lot knowing someone else had access to it... I say lock it up now! Da** I wish I was in NJ at the dealership

The dealership said they only got one key and remote when they got the car. According to carfax, this vehicle was a lease that was turned in at the end of 2 years and then was sold at an auto auction in a neighboring state. The dealership that we purchased this vehicle from got it from that auto auction.

I Agree with Donner. Make sure you Garage it until you can reconfig it.

I also remember talking to a Ford tech when we had my wifes Escape remote start installed that once you add a key, the previous keys are no longer accepted in the vehicle codes. Basically, once you add a new key, you have to add all of them otherwise the ones that are not cycled through become inactive.

So we all agree?

You lock it up, disable the remote start and get everything reprogrammed? What about the alarm, factory?

Yes, it is one of the remote start / alarm combos that Ford sells.

Trust me I am taking this seriously. I am getting another key today and we have a remote from my wifes Escape that we took off of her keys that we traded in because the dealer only had the one remote. I was hoping I could reprogram the remote from my wifes Escape and get it to work with the new car.

I work for a police dept full time and am also a volunteer fireman. I asked a fellow fireman who used to work at this dealership where we got the Explorer from about the key issue and he said that used cars a lot of times only come in with the one key. If the person forgets the spare set home, they usually say they will go home and bring it back and they end up forgetting about it. I am not saying that there are not dishonest people out there, trust me there are which is why I got into law enforcement. Also, with the field I am in, if they want to steal your car, they will find a way. We have had numerous new vehicles with the push button start system stolen because the thiefs know a way around that already.

I'm not sure how it is on your year ford, but on the 06 mustangs once you tell it you want to program remotes it forgets all the old remotes.

On our '06 I turn a known key on/off 8 times then I hit one button on each remote I want to use. Only those remotes work now.

As for the key, thats a different story. It doesn't forget keys and I can only add a new key if I already have 2 known keys (which is why we have at least 3 keys for the car).

BTW.. we have the factory alarm (the remote has 4 buttons, lock/unlock trunk/panic)

You know exactly what to do... and your wife has to be out driving, yes it could be an honest mistake, but I wouldn't bet my family's safety or investment on someone else's mistake. Good move Brian! :salute:

Well, it took the Ford dealership an hour to do while I waited. The reprogrammed both remotes and added another key. It cost $25 for the key and another $90 to do the programming since we only had the one key. They said we could have used the procedure in the owners manual to add additional keys but we need to have at least two to start off with.

Now I just need to find out where the keyless entry module is inside my wifes 2005 Explorer as I was told in another thread that the original keyless pad code is on the deal on the module. Any idea where to look?

(I can only address part #1)

Excellent, my friend, excellent!

ford does not sell a factory remote start system it is an aftermarket option that the dealer had in stalled the company that installed it just programed the factory remote to the alarm try going to a local soundshop the places that sell the really big speackers and install them usually they are more inclined to aid and assist in matters like this

as far as where to look for the original key pad code it is by the jack in the back on the driver side the master code for your truck is there i suggest to change the code as well

irishtitan that is not the correct place for a keypad code for an 05 it is at the bottom of the passenger side b pillar that is the one behind the second row of seats

i couldbe wrong

it's possible that i am wrong i don't have a 05it would most likly get the correct answer if you were to google for the location

No need...

Your information about who provides the product is great... The location of the module has been identified. The original poster received some really good advice here, what's this about sending them to search elsewhere for an answer that has been answered correctly?

Irishtitan,

Ford did make a remote start system that a dealership could install. My wifes old 05 Escape had this feature added by the dealership where we purchased the car. It cost us something like $300 or so installed. The remote is completely different than the ones that come with the car brand new. The remote starter controllers feature a fourth blue button on it. The paperwork and instructions on how to operate the system all have the Ford logo on the paperwork.

MikeH,

Thanks for pointing out the location of the module for the keyless entry. I will look for it as soon as I have a day off from work.

MikeH,

Thanks for the info. I was able to pop off that paneling today and locate the module. I copied down the code into the owners manual to prevent any further problems like this.

Also, went back to the GM dealership were we purchased the Explorer, they are willing to refund us the amount it will cost to get a second key and what ever it costs for the programming since there was a bunch of stuff we caught them in lies about.

Thanks again for everyones input,

Brian
