Can I use a 2wd transmission in a 4wd explorer and only have to change the tailshaft housing? Do I have to take the transmission apart to change it? I need advice from someone who knows, before I buy a 2wd tranny.
Please respond,
I already searched for a thread on this, need help please. :D

More info

Do I have to change the output shaft, do I have to take it apart to change?

If you are buying one - save yourself a major headache and get one for the 4x4. There is a lot of work to do to exchange the tailshaft. You have to completly dissasemble the tranny - the shaft inserts from the inside - and it is the first part to go in before all the clutch packs, etc.

The fact that you have to ask the question means that you are not likely eqipped to do the work yourself - (not a slur - just an observation) - so get the right one and just worry about installing it.

uhh? think so?

I am equipped to do so myself, I found out from the Ford dealer that the shafts are the same. So, likely just the housing needs changed, EASY work.

Sometimes people who work alot and have families to devote time to, would rather take the easy way (changing a tailshaft housing, and swapping out a transmission) as opposed to rebuilding the transmission at home as I planned on doing, and trust me, I'm quite capable, not just some slob trying to save $$$$ I am just not familiar with FORD equipment mixing and matching. To me Ford was always THE "F" word  until I became obsessed with the Exploder I got recently. Right now I have the entire engine tore down to the block, and I am going to rebuild the tranny as well, just looking for some info, not someone's obvious assumption, and I'm hardly worried about the swap.

No offense, I have just seen alot of young wanna be mechanics ask stupid questions, and I didn't want to be grouped with them in your opinion. :D

I did already know the tailshaft comes out from the inside, I don't know why I asked, I have an ATSG rebuild book at home that I've went through already.

That's cool...

Note that I made the statement "just an observation, not a slur..." ;)

On the boards, one never knows who knows what - or at which level of capability they are so until I know otherwise, I tend to assume that exerience does not typically rule the day...
