Neutral sensing switch?

I had some work done on my 92 manual tranny last week and they said that when I had warranty work done about 5 years ago they crushed the wire for the neutral sensing switch when they put it back together. Now, I have been running without a problem so far and this weekend I fixed the wire with no change. Does anyone know what this does?
The switch is on the top right hand side of the tranny.

I believe it is for the back-up lights. An easy way to find out is to disconnect the connector, put the transmission in reverse and see if you still have reverse lights.

The neutral safety switch keeps you from starting your engine when you are in gear. So that the only time you can start your engine is either in park or neutral.
