1991 Explorer Sport
I have a 1991 ford explorer sport with 51,000 miles and i blew the head gasket and cracked the block. I am getting a 2000 explorer sport engine. They quoted me $4,000. Thats with labor. Is that a good deal?

First of all a 2000 Explorer Sport engine is a SOHC while your 91 motor was a pushrod 4.0. I don't think the new motor will match up but I could be wrong on that one. Has anyone out there done this swap?

I do think $4000 is too high. You could build one screaming pushrod 4.0 for that price. I think around $2000-2500 for a rebuilt 4.0 (installed) is more like it. I would find a reputable mechanic in your area and ask lots of questions.

I had my block replaced w/new heads, since both were cracked, new water pump housing (cracked), and new radiator (cause of cracked heads) for a little over $4000. If I'd had a second car I would have replaced the engine myself for a lot less. So I had someone do it for me. The heads alone were $600 a pair. If you have the time, and are'nt afraid of tools, do it yourself. Have Fun!
