How to: New Forscan Update Allows Module Programming

Prefix for threads which are instructional.
It works on my 2012 Focus, that's a 1st year MK3 unfortunately. All windows are auto up/down. I'm gonna try it on my 2016 Focus this weekend, the FOCCCUS program doesn't work on 2015+.

Yeah I'll keep digging and see what I can find. I'm actually really interested in how that system is wired. Maybe a simple wire connected to the main switch from the BCM that just has to be added.

Anyway, the biggest feature I would like to change (though I think it would require a reflashing), is to have an alarm/dinger go off with the blind spot detection when you use your signal and there is a car in the other lane.

Kia/Hyundais do this and so do Mercedes. Why the hell doesn't Ford do this?

That would be a great feature to have but only useful for those that actually signal lane changes at all times and don't have or use the 'lane keeping' feature..;)

Very curious to hear more about the possibility to activate global open for the windows. Am I understanding properly that since all of the switches aren't auto open/close, that global open is a non-starter? Even having the front windows open from the remote would be a huge help on searing hot days.

Sorry for the turn from the purpose of the thread, but could a dealer turn global open on via IDS instead of using the Forscan app?

Dealer is not able to activate it. In the 2 years I've had my vehicle, I've used the feature maybe 2 or 3 times. Check out the link in my post 13.

I have to see what the wiring looks like for a car with this feature before I can determine if it is possible or not.

Right now I know the system itself as it sits, cannot do it. There are no signal wires present to control the windows besides the operator pressing the switch buttons.

If it was wired I think only the front two can do the operation because of the auto up/down. When the window becomes fully open or closed there is a surge/spike in the current for the motor and these "smart" motors detect this and turn the current off to stop it.

Again I saw a test wire in the wiring so this maybe a control/signal wire that might be used. Look at pin 6 on the front wiper motors.

As far as straying from the original topic, this is kinda the talk I wanted initiated. Essentially adding OEM options or settings that didn't come with your vehicle from the factory.

This was a big thing on Rangers and Explorers of the past. Ranger guys added Explorer overhead consoles w/ Temp display and Compass, Sport Trac white faced gauge, and even the EATC from Limited/Eddie Bauer Explorers.

Explorer guys added EATC and Message Centers.

My Ranger I added tilt steering column, cruise control, power windows, locks, and mirrors.

Only difference is back on those modules you didn't have CAN bus and most signals were sent by either an analogy voltage signal (ON, OFF, or sensor voltage) or PWM (like speed signal). Then you only had to swap hardware over. Sometimes just having to change a module out.

Now you have to worry about flashing or coding control units and this is what this thread is about.

Nice investigative work! Now... will the SJB be needed (if it even can be) or does the BCM have a pin that can send the global signal out to the motors?

Love to see the progress in the conversation here! Global down is invaluable when the interior is 140+ on a hot summer day. Even 10 sec of the windows open reduces the cabin temp substantially. I used it almost every day in the summer on the Chevy Volt I'm currently driving.

I know Forscan can be very intimidating for newcomers, but I wanted to point out that Forscan Lite (mobile phone version) has many of the key features without the ability to push changes to the vehicle.

What this means is that one could use Forscan Lite to read ALL Diagnostic Trouble Codes from ALL available modules without risk of pushing an unintentional change to the vehicle.

The benefit of this is that Virtually every other program I see people mention using only pulls DTC's from the OBD module. The OBD module may not throw a code for condition that's still a pending code in the PCM. These codes are invaluable to troubleshooting without tearing into the engine or spending money on randomly replacing sensors/parts.

Cancel my previous post. After doing some digging, it appears that the SJB and the BCM are one in the same :/. That wiring diagram from the MKT shows global open coming from pin 10 of the C2280c connector which is the upper-left most J3 connector on our BCM. The only wiring diagram I have found for the BCM shows pin 10 is "unused" so that very well could be it. I have yet to find a drawing to show which one is really pin 10 though but will keep digging. This may be just simply running a wire from the bcm to pin 6 of the windows and pin 10 of the sunroof. And activating via Forscan of course.

That's my thought process as well. Maybe one more hiccup: Does the RFA send a message to the BCM when you hold down the unlock button?

Here is the possible BCM connector C2280C:

Since the diagrams show a wire already at the motor at pin 6 to C3138 Pin 33, you may just have to run a wire from the BCM to the door connector (C3138).

Does Forscan allow you to upload/modify your own code?

Right now it's just changing variables.

Can't change actual software. Maybe in the future they will allow software flashing, but this is probably for pre-compiled code. But you never know the Russians that make Forscan may figure that one out.

As far as flashing I don't think our basic ELM327 adapters will fit the bill. I think you will have to get a J2534 pass through device like a Mongoose cable. A lot of them are in the 500 dollar range.

*****EDIT******

I have to correct my previous statement. Vehicles with CAN bus (around 2004+)can be reflashed using an ELM327. It was older vehicles using J1850 PWM that have to use a J2534 pass through device. This gen explorer should be good once the Forscan functionality has been implemented.

Hey Peterk9,

How hard is it to get access to your BCM? Our Explorers are a pain, so I'm sure yours is the same.

Since you have a vehicle that has this feature I'm wondering if you could put a multimeter on the output pin and see what you get from it when you hold unlock and lock.

I pulled an '11 owners manual and it says that it has global open and close, but only one wire goes to the smart motors. Plus the diagram says "pulse train (FET)". Which means it's using a mosfet transistor to switch on and off the battery voltage from the hot at all times fuse.

Wonder what the signal is for both? Sounds like a PWM signal but I wonder what the smart motors interpret as open or close.

Man I need an oscilloscope.

How do you get to model configuration mode? I don't see that tab.

nvm, extended license

OK, got extended license, searched Forscan site still can't figure out how to get module configuration mode tab. Sheltonfilms?

Using a PC to do this?

When you click on the Steering Wheel with the question mark in it (left side button) does it say "Extended License. Registered to John Doe. Valid until XX/XX/2016"? Also says 2.3.0 Beta?

What happens when you click on the microchip button?

Yes PC, license good.

It lists the modules, but I only have 2 tabs. 1.Configuration and programming, and 2. Log.
