New GT-40 'P' Headers in Summit

Well I just ordered my "P51" headers this morning from Summit. :D I'll let you know when they come in and when I install them. I think that having the ceramic coated headers for $60 more will be nice. I can't wait! :bounce:

Congradulations, JJUE. I have yet to put mine on for my 96, but the ceramic coating for $60 is a DEAL. I had to send mine off for the coating, but it was around $175.

I am still looking for a rectangular copper gasket that measures roughly 1.25X1.75 at the header ports. Thought Mr. Gasket part #7161 was the answer, but they are oval shaped, not rectangular, as are the head ports and header ports. Again, congradualtions! Mike

P Headers

JJUE, I'm also really interested in how the P headers work for you. Like most of the 5.0 crowd, I've wanted to install headers, but without too much extra modification. Please let us know how they work out.

Well, I received my headers, but it didn't have the EGR connection on it. I've been driving my vehicle, so I haven't been able to reach around my engine to determine where the EGR tube connects to the headers. Does anyone know where I am supposed to put the connection onto the header, and what type of connector is it? I know that exact placement will require test fitting and all, but I am trying to make plans to install the headers without having the vehicle down for long since it is my daily driver.

Don't 97's have an internal EGR?

96's and SOME 97's have internal EGR (GT-40)

SOME 97's and 98-up have external EGR (GT-40p)

wanna explain the purpose of an EGR to me? :) thanks!

Recirculates exhaust gas into combustion chamber in order to decrease emissions basically. Other than that it doesn't do much as far as i know (except cost a lot to fix when it stops working :p). If you get a custom burned chip you can have the EGR system deleted so it can't be that important. I think thats what i'm going to do when i get headers instead of fooling around with getting the fitting welded on. There aren't any emissions tests where i live so i don't have to worry about that.

so the fitting that we are talking about welding on is that hose on the passenger side that goes from the rear of the header to the egr? That's not a big deal at all... just hate to weld crap to a nice set of stainless or ceramic headers. It's very doable though. I thought someone else tackled this a while back... I want some pics as I am sure we all would appreciate them...

i dont understand... they must have sent you the wrong headers, because the P50 model# headers should have an EGR fitting on them. their for the GT-40P head explorers.

I think they may have re nembered the headers.... If you look at the pic on summit of the P50s they look like regular shorty headers, not the explorer specific shaped headers like the ones for the 96 Explorers. Also, the P50s in the description are 1 5/8 diameter while the headers listed for the 96 explorer are only 1 1/2 diameter. I think Ford may have screwed with the numbers when they reintroduced these.

here's the pic from summit of the P50s

Here are the GT40 headers listed for the 96 Explorer next to the factory 'headers'

They don't look like they will interchange, especially considering the tight clearances on an X. It would be really nice if they work though cause the Headers for the Explorer look really restrictive.

I would really like to know which headers to get. I will be replacing mine soon on my 97 to get rid of that damn ticking noise from the stock stuff. From the picture above the P50s look like they will need a custom exhaust after the header. I guess this isn't a big deal for me since I was planning that anyways. Let me know if you guys needed anything custom with those headers.

Thanks,

Ev

As jjue and jamet knows, try to get the ceramic coated from Ford. It will save you a big bundle. I bought the stainless as they were the only ones available. Sent them off to have them coated at Jet-hot. It was an additional $175, but they did a nice job from what I can tell and they look almost like chrome. Bet they will outlast my Explorer! Still it the ceramic coated ones from Ford Motorsport is a much better bargin, IMO. Mike

No, I didn't get the wrong headers. I have talked to several techs, and the P51's are the correct header, and they are actually normal looking instead of the screwed-up look that the '96 Explorer has. For right now, I think that it is cheaper to weld the fitting on since I'd want a customized 2-program chip, and that is more money than I'd want to spend while I'm looking for a house while the interest rates are low. However, this project postponed as I'm leaving for the metro Detroit area for 2 weeks on Sunday.

i still dont understand why they dont have the EGR fitting. they should by all means have the EGR fitting.

By the way, folks, do you all know what the torque specs are for our Motorsport headers? Thanks Mike
