New GT-40 'P' Headers in Summit

Hmm. Sounds good. I know the turbo guys use this to keep the heat in the headers and thus into the turbo, but I have not heard of it keeping the engine cooler?

BTW, I pull trailers frequently with my Ranger. Boy, what a difference the V8 made! I have pulled with my Mountaineer V8, but my Ranger would out pull it in a second. I don't know if it is due to the FRPP headers or the open exhaust, since right now those are the only things different than stock.

Towing is one of the reasons for choosing the blower I am using. Nothing beat full boost at 1500RPM! Also, with the headers, I am going long tube for the added low end torque, as opposed to the upper end from the shorties.

Good Luck. Your header swap will be much easier since you do not have to deal with the EGR tube 27mm nuts. There are not enough cuss word in the english language to discribe them. I am going to need to buy a 27mm cheapie wrench and cut it in half, so I can work on these easier. You can only move a normal 27mm wrench ~30 degrees in the tight confines of the engine bay. I nearly removed my upper intake one day, just to get it off!

do you mean that big ass one on the passanger side header?...god that thing is a PAIN!!!!

So if the E50's are a bolt in exact fit EGR and all for my 98 GT-40P i'll get them tomorrow from the dealer...

does anyone here actualy HAVE headers on a 98 5.0???

how many of us have actually installed headers ourselves with tools normally found in a home "garage"? i'm trying to get a survey of how long it took and how much experience you had prior

I have the E50s on my Explorer engine. They do not come with the EGR fitting in place. You need to cut it off the stock manifold and weld in place on the new header, then drill a hole.

I did mine while swaping the engin into my Ranger. Working on a current explorer from start to finish, I would say it is an all day event. The biggest issue would be getting the factory parts off. I tried to get the EGR tube off my mountaineer with 70K on it and it has not budged. I finally sadi the hell with it and will live with the crack in the tube until I pull the manifolds to put headers on.

So let me recap to make sure I have it right:
5.0 Ex's/Mounty's take the E-50/E-51 header regardless of year or head. The only difference being whether you have to do that EGR tube modification.
P-headers are Mustang specific.
Correct? This is making my head hurt. :p

Lou.

While we're on the subject of the EGR fitting, is there any advantage/disadvantage to getting a chip with EGR delete and not having to worry about welding the EGR fitting up? This would be easier, cheaper (for an apten chip reburn at least) and would preserve the lifetime warranty on the FRPP headers.

EGR is a pollution control part, therefor you would be adding to the pollutants in the environment if you deleted it. however, it really doesnt do much, and if you ditch it you're not gonna be a gross poluter. i dont recommend that you do this, however i know that is what I would do... it d@mn sure would be alot easier.

BTW, there are lots of 'stangs out there with no EGR that pass the tailpipe sniffer. whether or not it passes visual inspection is a different story.

Granted, the 96 FMS headers look strange, following the general lines of the OE headers. But, I can tell you, they do add power. You can tell it during normal driving. However torque pulls, not horsepower, so I will see how it pulls at 60-65 MPH at about 3000 RPM towing this spring. I hope the torque band will have only shifted slightly and that the new headers will increase milage while towing at highway speed. Then, for me and the wife, they will pay for themselves over several long trips. Mike

Towing at 3,000RPM at 60-65? When I pulled my 6000lb load last fall, I was moving ~75MPH at 2600RPM. I had no issue pulling the load in O/D.

The only difference I have from a stock V8 explorer is FRPP headers, 3.5" full single exhaust aft of the factory cat pipes, and 4.10:1 gears.

The gears are a slight difference, but really nice on the highway. I run ~2700-2800 at 80MPH. The only issue is I only get 16.5MPG in my 4x4 S/C Ranger with this combo.

I have a 3.73 LS axle. With over 30 years of towing experience, I have learned it is wiser to tow out of overdrive. And your tranny will love you for it. Gas milage is only slightly less. Plus a Senior Master Ford mechanic I use says to tow out of overdrive..too, I have found torque is better out of overdrive towing. Mike

<sigh>

I installed my E51 headers in my garage... takes a little while but from what i remember it was nothing to big. I did it while i was swapping my cam out so i had the intake off also.... this was almost 3.5 years ago so i dont really remember.

so, the E51's will work on the GT-40P heads?

They fit perfectly. Only need to add the EGR fitting.

BTW, act quick. From what I heard on the RPS board, some one called FRPP and they have been discontinued. None in stock. Summit had 4 sets a few days ago.

I hope that one of those 4 is mine for my exchange then. I'll be upset if I don't end up getting one of them.

ok, so let me get this straight. If i have a 1996 Explorer, do i need the goofy ass looking headers?

Well the two headers would have looked exactly the same.. just the Ps would have the bung on them. But yeah, you would need the standard headers for the GT40s. So, no. Not the goofy looking ones. :D
