new here, problem with '93 explorer

But for a young family with several kids in the car at once? Course not. I don't care how hard I would have to work , I would get a loan and get a decent vehicle so I know my kids , AND I , would survive if the worst came to worst.

Likes this car?

Edit: I think a few people missed my last post about owning a newer car and being young.

My insurance was higher then my damn payment because.... You have to maintain FULL coverage on any vehicle you get a loan to pay for it with. That being said I hope you get paid per dish where you work at and not by the hour.

I washed dishes at Bob Evans years ago, Not washed anything other then a baby bottle since then. :)

It became federal mandate because airbags are better then hitting your head on the steering wheel.

I agree , for me , a 19yo dishwasher , an old first gen is perfect , can't afford much else.

But for a young family with several kids in the car at once? Course not. I don't care how hard I would have to work , I would get a loan and get a decent vehicle so I know my kids , AND I , would survive if the worst came to worst.

Not only that but there existed safer cars at the time that had airbags , so at least find something safer if not newer. It doesn't have to be a brand new state of the art suv. Just safer.

Okay first, if you're wearing you're seatbelt, you wont hit you're head on the steering wheel, unless you are very short (or a child) and you're seat is all the way forwards. in which case, airbags will do more harm than good anyhow. this is fact look it up. (that's what airbag disable features are for, child/small passengers!)

second, what's the deal with so many people on here bagging on explorers, I've never been on a forum before where so many of the people here don't even like the vehicle they own/vehicle the forum is about! it's just weird.

and (about the safety thing) please read the posted insurance statistics above. they are very informative.

air bags are more a sales gimmick/requirement for vehicles now than a true safety feature. a true safety feature (becoming a broken record here) is lots of weight + steel frame + not being a low rider + safe driving of course. i think the explorer fits the qualifications of a safe vehicle very well, in my book at least. it has 3 point seat belts, a lot of room inside (so you don't hit your head on stuff in a collision) and it's solid and heavy. oh, and it has a padded dash etc.

so you drive an explorer because it's the cheapest thing you can get/affordable. i drive one because i think it's safe, it will be safe for my kids when i have them (im 28) and it is very practical for my work (good cargo space without horrible fuel economy, and its reliable) i could afford a new suv but I'm not the kind of person that requires that ridiculous status symbol a new car provides, and i don't think it would be better than my first gen anyhow (for reasons stated above) it would probably be worse for other reasons i dont want to get into (other than the stupid monthly payments)

rhauf, I agree with a lot of the things that you've said in your post. I got my explorer because it is a bigger vehicle, I personally prefer a truck/suv over a car. I think that I would have more of a chance in my explorer then a car in a crash or what not, living in WI with the winters I feel a lot safer in that. Before the explorer I had a 92 t-bird, it was a good car but not very good in the winter and hauling things (kids, grocery's, larger objects) was practically out of the question. (besides the fact that I happen to like explorers, I prefer them out of some of the other suv's out there)

As for saving up and buying something safer or with airbags, I have a disability and live on a fixed income, working extra hours to save more is not an option for me so that's where you have to take what you can get comes in.

It has a 3 out of 5 star crash test rating , that's 60%. But hey that's tecnically a D- so it passes! Yay it's safe! Who needs airbags? The 15 year old seat belts will save me from hitting the dash.

That and it's a big car , so whatever I hit will be damaged but I won't be.

Maybe you should buy a hummer? How about a 6x6 military transport? Those things are really big but 25 years old :)

realmantoys.com has some. If i had 300 acres to enjoy it and the money to afford it and 300 acres I'd so buy a couple :p:

I really was being sarcastic.

workin on a ford

lisin you guys out there with ford exploders i just had one of thease thangs towed in to my driveway but befor that it also had that same wable that little keeper in side the lock nut came clear out and let the nut come clear off the car and the wheel went bouncein down the road ............. caliper and all moral to the story sell your fords to scrap yard! buy chevy ! granted chevy isnt perfict how ever the problem chevrolet has very simple and ez to take care of

So your saying basically if your lazy and don't take care of your car , buy a cheverolet?

no i am tryin to save you some time and money

dont buy junk go get something that works

so clearly your rather uneducated about cars in general. any car has flaws, no matter who made it. if you dont take care of it, its going to have more problems, because face it, any vehicle needs good maintenance.
its probably pointless to sit here and argue with someone who is stupid enough to say, junk your ford and buy a chevy, because that proves you know little about automobiles.
but seriously, what the hell are you doing on a ford forum, just come here to post about how much you hate fords? who does that?

if you dont have something useful to say, dont say it!

oh ya, punctuation, ever heard of it?

i was origanaly on the form i was researching ford exploder 4 wheel drive hubs and i knoticed that this is a common problem i was thinkin to my self i never seen a chevy with such a derastic problem with wheel just falling off the car not to minchon i like tiein yall in knots

minchon? WTF is that? new form of phonetics? Kinda like it. Hav U red the book or did you reed it?

What's the topic of this thread anyway?

i never seen a chevy with such a derastic problem

General Motors, 2004. General Motors had to recall 3.6 million trucks because of tailgate problems. Reports say that there were as many as 134 people who suffered some kind of minor injury when the tailgate collapsed. The cause of the problem was corroded cables on the tailgate. Trucks that were caught in this mess included the Silverado, Sierra, Escalades and Avalanche.

engine mounts would separate from the engine frames and fall back onto the throttle. Well, this is what happen to cause a recall of 6.7 million vehicles. The models affected included the Belair, Brookwood, Camaro, Caprice, Chevrolet, Chevy II, G Series, Impala, Kingswood, Nova, P Series, C Series and Townsmen

Crash test rating...phhffff....

I'd trust my '93 in a crash, with me driving.

There is a very special tool to communicating in a forum. You know what its called? A DICTIONARY!! And more to the point, if I understand your horrible grammar and language, if you cannot have anything nice to say don't say it.

Ford has had it's share of problems and so has GMC (if you didn't know, that is the parent company of Chevrolet). So give it a rest. Your locknut problem was more than likely bad maintenance.

well there ya go. above in the last few posts, are several examples of problems GM has faced in the past.
if your gonna come here and trash fords, at least learn how to speak, spell, and generally structure a sentence first. and also learn how to back up your opinions with some facts.

until you can do those simple, 6th grade tasks, get out of here!

Explorer are very safe, even if you are absent minded and leave your tires half-deflated and make them explode from over heating. In this case you still have a high chance of surviving, as long as you are buckled in! It is the people who are not buckled in and roll over and are then ejected out of the window during a roll over then the truck rolls over your body turning you into a pancake.

Just stay zipped up inside!
