I just finished rebuilding my 93 4.0L engine. The only problem is one of the the new lifters has a tapping noise which last for about a minute after the engine is started. If I turn the engine off, wait a few seconds and re-start it again, the tapping starts again and disappears after short period. I'm looking for a possible cause.

Did you put a new oil pump and new pushrods in when you rebuilt the motor?

What exactly did you replace on your rebuild?

The following items were replaced with new parts:

CAM Shaft & Bearings
Oil Pump
pistons & rings
Rod Bearings
Main Bearings
Lifter
Timing kit

I did not replace the push rod or the rocker arms. They appeared to be in good condition, all though I am having my doubts.

My push rods clatter from being worn always except idle. Mostly when the RPM's are coming down.

Contact http://www.deltacam.com/ they make an upgraded version of the rocker arms and you can get the pushrods and rocker arms on ebay for $124 from this company.

There is a history of higher mileage Explorer OHV motors having the tap due to wear in either the rockers or in the pushrods. As mentioned above, I'd replace 'em since you replaced most of the other components.
