New member 11/10/23... screwed up my first post as I asked a question instead of an introduction. So here goes my Intro...
Bought our latest Explorer in Dec. 2022 in NC. It's a 2005 XLT, V-8, 4.6 L, 4 Door, 4x4, 200K+ miles, medium dark blue (always wanted a blue one), gray interior, leather, with sunroof... last owner removed the 3rd row seats, so I don't have any. The undercarriage was "cherry" as I told my wife... and since my Burgundy w/ 2-tone tan interior 2006 Eddie Bauer Explorer was taken off the road, because the undercarriage became "iffy" from all the rust and it was getting harder to remove parts to replaced them. I didn't want my wife driving it anymore to cart the kiddos around. She didn't want to drive it because somehow a large rusty hole formed between the CAT and the pipe coming out of the engine to the CAT.. (very small section and difficult to patch). I have not heard anyone complain of a situation like that so, not sure how it happened. Anyways, we parked it and are now in the process of parting it out, because we replaced quite a few new parts on it, engine is good, the tranny is very good (absolutely no problems after my wife figured out why it was lurching forward from a stop as we excellerated... it needed additional programming "fix" added to the transition computer thingy... so she took it to Ford told them what to load into the program and it drove great ever since, until the rust took over!) And prior to that we had a Dark Red w/ tan interior 1998 Explorer XLT. We rebuilt the tranny in SC for our son to drive when he got his license, but he wanted to drive a rice burner instead... so we wasted our money, because it sat in our driveway and now we are parting it out too... Engine good, tranny good, and mis. new parts... but I will be suggesting anyone that purchases to drain and add new fluids and lubricants since it has been sitting for about 12 years now. Believe it or not, my wife had nitrogen put in the tires before we parked it and the tires although beginning to crack are still not flat... she put the same on our 06, and it has been sitting for about a 1 year and tires still have air. I know people say it's a waste of money, but... she insists on it, because she hates having to put air in the tires all the time when the weather changes. I digress, anyway, all of them 4x4, and would NEVER buy an SUV without 4x4... as we hail from New England, and want to go back, but we are stuck in NC for now. Just retired from the Navy in January 2023... so we are working on it. Anyways, having lots of trouble with our new older 2005 Explorer and down to 1 vehicle until it's fixed. We drove a 2021 Expedition XL in August to bring my daughter up to college in Boston & we loved it, lots of very convenient storage for all your crap, but the seats were not that comfy... kinda hard. Fuel economy was way better than I thought it would be. After driving it though, we are seriously considering purchasing a used newer Expedition despite being almost empty nesters, one more kiddo... but he is still in Junior High, so we have a bit more time to make it useful, especially since we have to move our daughter in and out of the dorm every year until our she graduates. TG for GI Bill and Scholarships otherwise we could never afford to put her through college. Anyways. I am a Ford owner since I met my wife and bought my first Ford, because she insisted. So far so good, despite the saying. My 2009 Taurus has 276K+ miles on it and I only parked it because the water pump went... and I was quoted $4000 to fix it. Yikes. I guess were going to part that out too... since getting parts for older cars is becoming difficult now... hopefully someone will be grateful we didn't just decide to junk & crush them.
