1998 Ford Explorer XLT
Hey guys, my name's Alex, im 24 an have had my 98 explorer xlt for about a year now. i bought it for 700 bucks and all it needed was a front end alignment. i original bought it to flip it and make some money but after taking it into the woods to pull a buddy out of a mudhole i was surprised as to how well it did. That made me decide to keep it around. sense then, ive TT'd it with extended shackles, added a performance chip for mpg and hp, painted it camo im no pro painter but it does the job. fabbed up a tubular front bumper and put 2 8" Rally lights on that, ive put goodyear wrangler authoritys on it 31X10.5R15, torn out all the carpeting and center console and rubber coated the floor i removed those useless running boards as well.
Still reading? the list keeps going.
ive replaced the inner and outter tie rods on both sides as well as both sway bar end links and both hub assemblys, as well as all 4 ball joints and both upper control. all replacement parts are offroad performance parts. gotta make that garbage independant suspension set up as strong as can be till i have everything for the sas. i also replaced the rack and pinion but only with a new stock one. i also shaped and installed new rocker panals but the rocks and logs have messed those up... oops... looks like i may need to buy/fab some rock sliders.
Still reading now? yeah i have more money into this truck than the truck is worth according to fair market value.... thank god its worth milions in value to me so there is plenty of room for new stuff.
Anyway, i think thats all the background info on it.

On to the issues now... I line in NH an we are of course in our winter season, my explorer has a slightly hard time starting but always does, when i first start it it idles very rough and will eve stall out, its traveling between about 300-2500 rpm on idle. When i dont have time to let it warm up and i just start it and go it doesnt have barely anything for power. after about 20 seconds of 3/4 throttle it will kick in and take off, for that first 20 seconds or so it barely crawls, if i let off the gas aftr it takes off it goes right back to very low power. it runs like that untill it is warm. any ideas? pcv? fuel filter? fuel pump? i dont know.
It also likes to pull to the right and left at random times. but i think that is because i need new pads and rotors on the front. the rear has new pads but new rotors are on the list as well.

First thing I would do is to pull the OBD II codes and see if anything shows up. You can get that done at most autoparts stores for free.

Hopefully it show something that you can act on.

Welcome to the forum:chug:

hey thanks alot buddy. ive been using this forum since i bought the exlorer but never made an account.

I was planning on bringing it to my uncles shop to have him hook up his OBD II.

obviously thats a good place to start. i just try not to use garages if at all possible. everything that hasbeen done i have done myself, outside, on the ground, including the rack and pinion which took about 6 hours none stop.

by the way, that is one hell of an exporer in your display pick. did you do a build thread? if so, a link to that would be a beautiful way to kill some time tonight :)

Just click on the links in Ricks signature (in his post above... .) to look at the "great Pumpkin" in more detail.

He's got a couple of real nice Dodge Dart's too.

ok thanks a bunch. im gonna check that out now. i noticed the darts listed in his signature as well. have you seen the new ones? they sure aint what they used to be.
