Its possible but you would need a GEM all the wiring and what not to put a 5.0 in it. What would need is a doaner truck...

Possible yes, Worth the time? Money? Down time?

'98 4.0

I'm trying to find the same info. My '98 went 120K before the timing chain thing happened. I found a '02 4.0 engine and someone to put it in for me. I'm just trying to find out for my own peice of mind. I can't afford to create a monster. I've got to drive my Sport.
Let us know if you find out anyhting and I'll do the same.

For using another 4.0 SOHC, use basically all of the external parts, most of it will be the same. Keep the items which are the same, swap the rest from the original engine. Internally they are the same for most of the SOHC 4.0's. Even the others can be used with PCM tuning, as in a later engine from a Mustang or newer truck, even if the cam or compression changed.

FYI, the shortblock of the SOHC is virtually the same as a OHV 4.0, the items not related to the valvetrain(block, pistons, crank, rods). Good luck,

From what I understand, the 4x4 uses a balance-shaft engine. Would there be any problem using a non-balance-shaft engine on a 4x4 app?

I'm in the same boat looking for a newer replacement engine (03+ preferred), but can't seem to get anyone to answer this. If I could get any ol 4.0L SOHC and swap my model-specific stuff over, that would be great news.

From the lack of any information suggesting any difference between the two(2WD/4WD), I would use either in place of any application. Everything else seems to be identical, including cams and PCM tuning.

I swapped in a '98 4.0L SOHC into my '97 after the old engine hydrolocked. The engine I have now has a "4x4" sticker on it, so maybe there is a difference between the 2wd and 4wd? Other than that, the shop that did the swap told me they had to adapt something in the wiring harness that was different between the two engines. Good luck with the swap!

Motor

Hello,

I'm sorry the SOHC 4,0 V6 is build in Cologne Germany!! :( So far for Gemany engineering. You cannot swop a 2wd and a 4wd motor because of the 4x4 uses a balance-shaft engine!!!

Greetings from a dutch living in Germany (near Cologne)

Actually, I found out yesterday that I can use either engine without physically damaging anything. The balance shaft is used in the 4wd engines in order to "tune out" an audible resonance in the front axle asy caused by the engine.

I may just have some noise/vibration that wasn't there before. My A/T tires and exhaust are loud enough that I shouldn't hear/feel it anyway.

My question is: Could the balance shaft be added to a 2wd engine? Here, mustang 4.0L are cheaper than the ranger/explorer variants. If i could take the balance shaft from my engine and put it on that one, id be in business. The only problem i see is that i think the balance shaft chain is behind the jackshaft chain.

You need to find out if the block is identical, same mounting holes etc. A Ford tech at a dealership may know, having had them apart.

Well, now ive got a 4.0L out of a ranger, and the block is drilled and tapped to accept a balance shaft, which the engine does not have. The issue that i have is that the jackshaft chain has to be removed to put on the balance shaft chain. Is there anyway to rmove and replace the jackshaft chain, without using the OTC tool set?
