Hello all,

Just purchased a 2013 Explorer XLT 2WD. Joining to see what you guys do to these things. I'm coming from the world of Toyota so this ride has a LOT to live up to. So far I like it for what it is, a car. I just moved from a Tundra 5.7 and this is going to be an adjustment and a half.

I'm just a bit deflated as I found out this thing can only tow 2K lbs. Hopefully I find redemption in other areas. I guess I expect more out of an SUV. Just looking at this board has me worried. I never thought to check towing capacities when looking at a midsize SUV. Shame on me. I can't even go to uHaul and get a utility trailer. :(

So, here's to hoping for the best. I really want to like Ford but my fault for starting off on a wobbly foot. I love the way the vehicle looks and the features are great on the inside. Maybe we can find a balance. I love to mod my rigs but I'm not seeing too much...

Welcome to our forums:chug:

I moved your post into our Stock 2011-2013 forum.

Do you happen to have the 4-cylinder ecoboost? I believe that one has a 2K towing capacity whereas the V6 has 5K

Towing Specifications
Optional Class III Trailer Tow Package
Configuration Axle Ratio GCWR Max Loaded Trailer Weight
3.5L TiVCT V6 FWD 3.39 9980 5000
3.5L TiVCT V6 4WD 3.65 10160 5000
2.0L EcoBoost I4 FWD 3.36 6830 2000
3.5L EcoBoost V6 4WD 3.16 10400 5000

I thought only the tow package equipped vehicles had the 5k tow limit. Vehicles without the package, regardless of engine, are limited to 2k.

I came over from Toyota as well after having had 3 Highlander Ltds.
By the way, don't feel bad about not being able to go to U-Haul for a trailer.
U-Haul will not rent to any Explorer owners regardless of tow capability.

I saw that. Guess I'll have to scour craigslist for my own trailer.

As for the 2K limit, my skis are right at it. So, I'm just going to go with it. It's ten times a year most, rest of the time it will be empty. Love driving the thing, much easier than my Tundra. I want to backfill the third spot in the garage with a beater Tacoma or F150. (can anyone guess my fav car makers? :D )
