2002 Mercury Mountaineer
I just picked up a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer 4.0L Rear wheel drive. The manufacture date is 06/01. It currently has 170K miles on the car. When I first got the car, we replaced the spark plugs and wires, oil, coolant and air filter. I drove the car for 1 week and noticed that from 2nd to 3rd gear, there would be a long delay in the shifting. The same delay followed from 3rd to 4th gear. Today, I took the car out to head to work and the car would not shift into any gears. Reverse or drive, none of the gears worked. It's like the clutch or torque converter never engages. I pulled the transmission plug to check the tranny oil (My transmission does not have a dipstick) level and it was a little low. So we pumped in about 1 quart before it was full. I turned the car on and I am still having the same problem. The car will not move no matter how much gas I give it. I do not hear any clunking noises when I rev it up. I did some research and many people are having the same problems with the servos or the block. I can check the servo and the block, but a junk yard not to far from my home has a 1997 low mileage ford explorer transmission for $125. A few questions to help me fix the problem:

1. What transmission does my vehilce have? Is it a 5R55E or 5R55S?

2. Will the transmission from a 1997 Explorer 4.0 work in my 2002?

3. Should I just buy new servos and try that?

Any advice would be awesome. Thanks for the help.

You have the 5R55W so I'm not sure if the 5R55E will match up but I think it might.

The servos are definitely something you should check first. And it sounds like you know your way around enough to do so.
