Ok folks, I have a new problem that I'm looking for a bit of advise about.

Either my front diff is binding and on its way out, or I am stuck in 4wd, even though the light goes on/off as normal on the dash.

It seems just like its in 4wd, the steering binds at either lock and it makes all the right 'noises' of being in 4wd on tarmac.

So, i've either gone a little far with the torsion twist and the cv's are at a bad angle, but they look pretty good, so not convinced, or i'm stuck in 4wd, or my front diff is shot!

Is it possible to remove the front prop, driveshafts and diff completely and still drive the truck? The reason I ask, i've got to remove the diff to change the rear seal anyway, so figured i'd rebuild the entire diff while its out, but I would need the use of my truck during the process.

I understand that it would only be 2wd (if its driveable at all) and thats not a problem.

Also, is there any mechanical way to kick it out of 4wd if it is stuck (something I can give a 'gentle nudge' to release)

The front axles are needed to hold the hub on I believe. I read somewhere on here that someone dismantled the CV joint leaving just the bit with the splines on so it all held together but I don't know how much of a good idea is it!

2 wheel drive

you can dismantle the outer cv joints then use them to hold the hubs in place. aslong as you remove all the moving parts from the cv joints they will still be balanced and should be fine . as to transfer case you could remove the shift motor it drives a triangular selection shaft you could try moving that manualy to see if it will select H and L gears .
cheers chris

Have you tried it on some soft ground so that the wheels can spin and release any 'wind up'?

Just two wheels should be enough on a grass verge or similar.

I haven't tried to spin the wheels up yet, it's to dry at the mo, next days rain we get, I'll give it a ****, as I live down a mud track, it's like offroading just to get home in bad weather.

Chris, I like the idea of the transfer motor, as that's definitely what it feels like, being stuck in 4wd. I don't suppose you have a spare front axle? I still need to get down for that engine, it's just finding time at the mo. I will have to make a point of it!

front axle

hi i dont have a front axle at the moment but may have one nextweek .cheers chris

High fingers. Just wondering if you found a solution to this problem as my ex has developed the same symptoms
Cheers Fred
