I think it looks hella tight. Have you done any serious any serious snorkeling yet?
98 XLT AWD V8 5.0
Edelbrock IAS/explorer X sway bars
KKM intake/S&B high flow
2 10's and pioneers all around

Beleive me you WILL get your money's worth the first time you slam into a mudhole that's a little "too" deep.

Explorereb96 and I have been discussing doing this to an Explorer for about a month now. My idea was pretty similar, except I was gonna have the snorkel removable for daily driving, and have it go up along the a-pillar.

Lowd Pypes, is that your Mountaineer, or who does the Mountaineer belong to, and do they have a parts list for the snorkel????

might create a blind spot. may be you could run it up the side of the winshield. looks liek ti will suply lots of air. looks pretty killer. like a mean smoke stack.

I could have used that a few weeks ago!

Jon (aka Gilligan)

EFI Snorkel Kit

These are the details a friend gave me:

2 3/4" Steel tube with welded-on threaded tabs to mount PVC Cap

Welded flange for mounting on fender

2nd Flange slightly larger to reinforce inner fender

PVC Cap, recessed 1.5" to protect inlet

Bottom section of tube (that sits in fender) has indentations to allow hose a surface to grab.

Stainless steel mounting screws/bolts depending on preference

Only problem is finding the gromet where the pipe actually goes into the car. No reason why it shouldn't work. The picture posted, I created with Photoshop to see what it would look like. So far, I like what I see and I am probably going to take this project on in the next couple weeks. I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts or comments before I start cutting into the quarter panels of my truck. I am going to modify it a little by using 2.25" Aluminum piping and an aluminum cap instead of the PVC one. Also, they used some heater hose to go into the stock airbox and I think that I want something a little more waterproof than heater hose... maybe fabricate some 2.5" pvc piping and elbows. Let me know if anyone has done this or has any ideas... (I always think of this stuff "after" I put the car to the test.... dumbass.

No comments please... Just laugh and get on with your life!

As I said earlier, Karol and I have been looking into this, and pvc piping seems the most logical choice. I think the biggest issue is going to be finding enough room in the fender to run a large enough tube so the engine isn't starved for air. On my '01, there is very little room between the outer fender and the fender liner (about 1.5"), and there also isn't enough room to run it under the hood. I think that bringing it out of the fender right where the airbox is, and running a tube along the side of the truck up to the windshield is probably the easiest. Big issue is coming thru the fender neatly. I though about using one of the surface mount sst jeep gas cap covers, so you can remove the snorkel for everyday driving. Pop the cap open and install a pvc snorkel with O-rings on it to seal it when you go offroading. Put some SST mounting hardware onto the a pillar for support. www.mcmastercarr.com or www.grainger.com have a lot of hardware (suppliers use at work all the time) for this type of project.

Hey Jon, if you're Gilligan, that makes Karol "Maryann" since she sucked water into her motor last time we were out
:D

AWWW MAN that is so cool! 2 questions though, 1 does that require cutting holes in the body, and 2, is there any way to prevent water from coming into the car? that is what i am most worried about

Not so good news...

Yes, it does require cutting a hole in your quarter panel which I am not willing to do SO, I went to my local junkyard and picked up two quarter panels for $100 from some explorers. I am going to use on for testing, the other for final product and store my current one in the garage in plastic, just incase I ever sell the car or get tired of the stack coming out of my car. As for H2O coming in... your car should be shut pretty tight. Nothing leaked into my MM going through that water in the picture above. Now, I don't know how well ford puts these things together, as I am rather new to the whole exploder/MM thing but my XJ is sealed tight. My XJ was known around here as AmfibiusXJ cause we would do water runs in rivers... with weights in the car, I could go under 46" without stalling! At that depth, water was being pushed UP by my wipers!

Maybe it was a Jeep thing...

what about water in the doors?

seals...

well, I have a 98 MM and it is sealed fairly well, stock. I have not forged any rivers yet, so maybe I am the wrong person to ask but newer cars should do fine... as a matter a fact, real jeeps are supposed to let the water in... keeps you from floating away! If anyone has had any real water experience with a late model X/MM please let us know.

Well I have some experience following my friend's XJ's through small creeks. The explorer was extremely tight and let no water in at all. Can't say the same for my engine however. I am currently on #2.

ok i think im going to be hanlding a 100' long puddle about 2' deep soon so i wanna know how bad my truck is gonna stall. will it make it through?

If you are at stock height with stock tires DO NOT attempt this. It is not worth the hassle of getting your engine replaced. Your tires throw up water which is sucked from your fenderwell directly into the intake. But, if water doesn't get in your engine everything else is pretty watertight and should be ok.

2 feet?

sure... as a matter a fact, I see no need for a snorkel if you go slow (which, I shouldn't have to say, you will do anyway). make sure you check your tranny for water... your differentials... anything that has a tendency to leak or let water in... also, 100' I wouldn't be too surprised if you get some H2O in your gas tank... be careful.

YOu have some lift on your truck, right?

no

Have fun suckin in water in that "lower ram intake" It wouldn't surprise me if it sucks in water...

Yo ESPN, before taking to that H2O I would rerout your diffs, tranny and transfer case breather tubes, JamminG4Jim had a nice writeup on this a while ago,
also
has anyone heard the theory of rolling up your windows and putting defrost on high if you go under in order to pressure seal the truck from the inside? I heard this and thought, hell if someone is ever in the situation, then give it a shot instead of welcoming all the water.
