98 Explorer XLT
I bought a new jvc kd hdr1 with the scosche adapter for my 95 ford explorer xlt(from crutchfield) installed it and everything was great. Well I had to sell the 95 xlt and took my moms 98 4 door xlt which i am assuming is a premium system( the bottom of the factory radio says 4/2 DOOR EXPLORER PREM) My mom had problems with the display on the radio going out and remaining off and when I took it over the display would flicker and mostly remain off and a few days ago the radio decided to just stop working like someone hit the off switch. I checked both fuses 28 and 29 and they were fine so I'm installing my old/new jvc radio into the 98 xlt. The connection that i had on the scosche adapter fits but there is still another connection from the car that i dont know what to do with. heres some pictures. Anyone know what it is, and if i need it/what i need to adapt to that.

Don't need to do anything with it. It controls the rear seat controls, steering wheel controls, and CD changer.

see i didnt think i needed it since i looked up the harness for the 98 on crutchfield and it didnt have that. Thanks I'm gonna go install it and see if i can get it working.

Just curious, what is the box in the center for? You shouldn't need anything to install into a '98 or newer.

I just got everything all hooked up and everything works dimmer and all but i have to turn it way up to hear it and if i turn it up more to hear it it gets distorted which tells me its not using the amp. Sure that plug isnt to the amp?

No. The '98+ Systems used an internal amp. So there isn't one located in the vehicle. I have a feeling that box is reducing the output of the new headunits power. I'd try removing that(what does it do?) and see what happens.

its the adaptor that came with my radio when i bought it for the 95 xlt. The plug thats by my shifter is what plugs into my jvc radio and its got the all 4 speaker gain levels on that black adaptor and i turned all 4 of them up

Do the 95's have an external amp in the back? I think that is my problem, that black scosche adapter that has the gain levels on it is for the 95 only since it has an amp in the back(im guessing) and im trying to use that on my 98 which as you said had and internal amp. Should i just cut the connector for my jvc radio then the connector for my car off and just wire the two together and try it?

eliminate the box that says "scosche" it is a line level adapter--reducing the outputs--
the 95-97 had an amp in back which required this

The 98 up use deck power for speakers-you have this kind of harness. Ditch the black box--
