1999 Ford Explorer XLT
I have purchased a 1999 Ford Explorer XLT 4X4 and am doing some work on my own. I’ve already given her an oil change, cleaned the air filter (which had seeds in it, from a mouse or squirrel), and cleaned the maf sensor.

Honestly, this is my FIRST vehicle, bought with my own money, and put under my name, so I’m looking to take really good care of her. I’ve used the forum four times since I bought her (March 20), so obviously, I had to join.

The information here is both real and easy to refer to, although I also bought the Haynes manual.

My next goal is to replace the muffler (cracked; exhaust leak), change the spark plugs, and flush some fluids. She’s old, but she’s not done.

Vehicle: 1999 Ford Explorer
Name: Calamity Jane (famous female explorer and frontierswoman)
Odometer: 306644

Welcome, great looking first ride. What engine and transmission?

That's completely normal, need to start somewhere! I just did my plugs and ended up doing wires because one got destroyed removing it. If I were you i'd do both anyways. There are many helpful step by step guides for this job and if interested you can always pick up a complete workshop manual online; although I find youtube and this forum more helpful! Good luck and have fun learning! :)

Edit: Hello neighbor I live in the Edmonton area.

Edit: Hello neighbor I live in the Edmonton area.

I hadn’t planned on doing wires, they were done more recently than some of the other repairs. August 2016 - Both the spark plugs and the wires were replaced completely.

I actually got a complete history of the car from the date that the original owners bought it to the most recent service. I’ve logged everything into a book with the large items on another page so that I can refer to it quickly. It really made it easy to go over everything today and figure out what is needing replacing/repair and what is not.

Welcome. Nice looking Explorer. My wife drives a 99 Sport.

Does it rattle on cold start ups?
