Hi, I've just registered my husband on your site, he has an explorer registered in 2000. This is his second Explorer, it runs on Gas or Petrol. He works nights and was going out to work tonight when he noticed the engine light remained on. He has ended up going to work in my car because we could not find out what was wrong. He checked the oil etc but everything seemed ok, but as he travels quiet a distance to and from work he didn't want to risk driving it while this light remained on. Has anyone got any ideas what this might be, I might add the car starts up no problem. But any advice that saves a garage visit would be welcome please. I think he is going to be delighted with this site, it seems a great place.

Welcome to the site!
Firstly, your husband did the correct thing by not driving the truck with the CEL (Check Engine Light) staying on. And just to clarify things for those of you in the US our petrol is what you call gas. 'Gas' over here in the UK refers to LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) and any Explorer set up to run on LPG has had an after market conversion.
Back to the CEL light. I strongly recommend that you let a Ford agent have a look at your Explorer - the light is a warning that something is amiss. It might be something minor. Or not. The Ford agent will be able to read the error codes from the car's engine management system to determine what is wrong. Without the error code you really are shooting in the dark trying to figure out what's wrong.
Hopefully somebody will be along soon with a bit more help or advice.
By the way, I also have a 2000 Explorer North Face, but without the gas conversion.

Re: Check Engine Light.

I have just had the same problem that you described and mine turned out to be the DPFE (pressure sensor) to the EGR valve had quit, it is quite an expensive little sensor (here in Canada it cost me $260, the labor being only $65). Unless you have an OBD11 tester you will have to take it into a TRUSTED garage and have them check it out on their diagostic machine...of course it could be any one of a multiple faults but you must get it checked properly...could be just pennies also so anyway, wish you lots of luck...regards, Rexman. :

Welcome to the site.. I would definately recommend investing in a OBDII port scanner for your truck. They may be costly due to import duty taxes but its well worth it for the Explorer. You could probably contact Howard, another UK'er he should be able to tell you who to contact regarding parts if needed and possibly where to get the truck scanned for the Check engine light.

Ok you do need to start with the code. If you want to diy then you can get a code reader or scanner form http://www.gendandirect.co.uk/category_60.html . Depending on what you want a reader may be enough. Once you have the code that is being set then the diagnosis can begin. Please post back on here what the code is and we will all chip in with help.

Hi all, is the obd11 and obd2 the same thing keep seeing different ones on ebay, steve

Cheers Howard, noticed your close to me (I'm in Northampton) do you know anyone that would replace the inlet manifold gasket on a north face 2000 by any chance, Steve

Think I might have, starts first time everytime but when it cold the revs drop and tick over is erratic and very occasionally cuts out, once warm its fine again, I'm ordering a code reader to check it but looking at the posts on here it seems to point to a leak, Steve
