No 1st, Reverse is great still... any ideas?

No it would leak apply pressure causing the clutch to slip and burn up. Did he add the Sonnax manual valve index?

I dont think he did. I failed to mention that to him sorry.. crap.. i always forget something.

so what im going to say may offend some die hards but.
all the tranny shop did is put a kit in, seals, steels(hopefully)clutches probably did not do anything to the valvebody since you already did it(as an amatuer) bushings if they were out of specs? so what im trying to say. (this may go into the a4ld good enough)
you do not have to have seal protector, etc if you're careful. but i mean be careful
cause i had to go back in 3000 later to fix a band i did not REPLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but only a band cause they looked good to me always repalce the bands!!!!!!!!!!! now glaciers probably going to rip me a new one but !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of my concerns is forgetting to get that Sonnax manual valve index. He definately replaced all the bands and clutches i know for a fact, he also went ahead and checked the diff fluid and topped them off. As for the valve body i had already done it myself, so i could care less at this point, he did go through it and told us i had rebuilt it just fine (mom was concerned if i got the pucks in the right spots or something).

Took it out last night and this morning, runs like a charm. Just waiting on a belt tensioner and a belt.

Yeah, but i probably wont be doing that till its warm out. Also its going back in the spring for a checkup so would it be safter for me to ask him to install it? The valve body needs to be dropped to do it right?

I also find it funny how cheap insurance got green linked, and that it links to state farm...

I'd not obsess over it. When you rebuilt the VB, how did the hole in the manual valve look? Could you visually detect any ovalling?

Looked just fine to me, mind you this was after i got wd40 in my eyes lol.

I am having the same exact problem with an explorer as this one had. It has gotten to the point where there is no drive at all, but reverse is strong. What is the seal that is shown in the last photo from? I am also now getting the codes 157, 158, 181, 185, and 189. Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks

I dont really know what the seal is for since i didnt do the rebuild. I never checked any codes when i had the problem. Glacier would be able to help you a lot better then me hehe.

:chug:

A clutch pack in an automatic transmission is powered by a piston. The seal you refer to is the seal on that piston. I do not intend to start a debate, but the fit on those seals is real close and they have a "lip" which if folded back during insertion can break off causing a leak. To avoid this the manufacturer makes a set of "lip seals protectors" to use during assembly. This is true of all transmissions. I own several sets for the A4ld / 5R55 and 4R70W and loan them out. I am often told that it is overkill to use seal protectors and a careful assembler does not need them. With this thread I rest my case. I am as careful an assembler as I know. I use them. I loan them. Those who choose not to use them can proclaim me to be a "little old lady"... I just know what I build. They can build what they want.

Glacier, You seem to be really knowledgable about these transmissions and I have been following this thread fora whilenow. In your opinion, doyou think that I should try with a VB rebuild?

Its always better to be safe then sorry, as ive learnt the hard way here lol.

Explorertrouble... I am thinking in your situation you have a burned up forward clutch. I am doubtful a valve body rebuild will help you. I could be wrong, but that is my gut sense in your case. That means rebuild time.
