Here's what's up.

Swapped in 5 speed.
4405 control trac tcase
Brown Wire mod

4x4 works in auto and the high position, not in the low position. I found a thread that JoshC posted about the same problem so I grounded the wire that was discribed in his thread. I've been looking through all the wiring diagrams on my 97 service CD but I still have no idea what I'm looking for.

What usually causes a transfer case to not go into 4-low? I don't know if the "shift motor" is the problem because goes from auto to 4x4 high with no problem so I don't see the point in cleaning it...if I even have one?

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

Arnie

It doesnt use the motor to go into high. The motor is only to change the gearing. Clutches controll the 4x4 in there.

Well that's good to know. Now I can start narrowing this down. So I'll start with the shift motor cleaning and I'll check the wiring to that think. Thanks Taxxman!

Any ideas which of these wires I could run 12v to in order to bypass evertyhing else to see if the motor is actually the problem?

I just bought a 1997 that won't go into low. At least the dash light does not come on. Do you normally feel the low range engaging? How can I tell if I'm in low or not. I can't feel an acceleration difference so I assume I'm not getting low.

Also, I'm sure its here somewhere, but I'm new to the forums, where can I find/purchase the brown wire mod and can I install it myself if I'm handy with electrical stuff.

Thanks

James

you will feel the tcase engage in 4low...you are putting the truck in neutral first right? also when in 4low you will def have reduced gearing, so you will be able to tell

thebrow wire mod can be found here, read the ENTIRE thread first as some of the info changes as the thread evolves. its really simple to do

Welcome :D

If I had to guess it would be the shift relay H2L and or L2H.

It is very common for these to sieze up. Especially up here in the salt belt. Its good practice to engage it say once a month or so just to keep it moving. I never had problems with my 97 doing that. And I had a 98 that was owned by two people before me that never had it in low (I know becuase I know them), by the time I got it the motor was siezed and it would't **** so I replaced it and bingo it worked.

A majority of those wires do not go to the motor, its easy as can be to pull that motor so pull it and then take the 2 (guessing here) wires off the DC motor and hook them to a power source and see what happens. But I would put money on it being the shift motor. If you have done the brown wire mod hook it back up right and make sure thats not causing the problem.

"Bingo" It was just that easy. I got a new ford one off eBay for 70 bucks from some guy that bought the wrong part. Popped it in and now it's all back to normal. Thanks for your help Taxx.
