I have an 01 Explorer that will not go into 4WD. Most likely, this is a self inflicted wound due to inattention on my part, and I am looking for the most likely culprit to start my troubleshooting and I am looking for advice.
I use the Explorer to tow my boat and recently on a boat ramp I had to engage the 4WD to get up the ramp after retrieving the boat. I got out of the truck, strapped the boat, etc.. hopped back in and headed for home. About 20 miles down the road, I felt a shudder thru the whole truck. Everything seemed ok and I kept going; felt it again a little while later then nothing. Only when I get home did I realize I had left the truck in 4WD.
I have read thru the forums looking for help and I haven't seen anything like this.
All the fuses are good in the passenger compartment as well as under the hood. Turning the dial to engage 4WD does nothing; no click from the control module on the passenger side. Dash light are completely dead. I tried to crawl under the truck to see what I could see as far as shift motor and whatnot, but it is hard to tell without taking all things apart.
If anyone has any suggestions on simple troubleshooting, or an idea on what broke and how to fix it, I am all ears. Any help is appreciated.
