No 4x4 & no overhead console!?!?!?!

Ok, it may be a total coincidence, but my 4x4 will not engage and my overhead console is blacked out!

Turn the knob on the dash, and the 4x4 idiot light does not go on.

Look up to see if I am going N-S-E-W, or check the temp, and the display is black.

What happened? I dont see anything on the fuse diagram.

After looking at the wiring diagram for power distribution for 95 Explorers, I don't see how both could be caused by a single failure. Have you checked everything else electrical to make sure they are working?

Yep... one fuse.... fuse 10 on the interior fuse panel.... actually you may want to look at this thread... might be related .... good luck.

The overhead console uses fuse 10 but the transmission control switch uses fuse 26.

I've looked at the EVTM for 95 and followed the pages for every circuit from fuse 10 and I still don't see why he couldn't go into 4x4.

Thanks for the great link with the info about the brake pressure switch. I will get one next time I order parts.

I am not sure why that fuse is the cause... actually not sure if 95 and 96 or others are even close in electricals and designations as a couple of sources that I have (96 "ford cd" and 91-99 chilton) disagree / are confusing all over the place. From my 96 cd, that fuse appears to also supply the GEM with an "ignition" indication... although there appears to be two such "indicators" (at least on cd schematics for the GEM). It is possible that as a result, conditioning of the GEM is not "complete" and hence it does not provide the appropriate ground (which it normally uses for switch things) to activate 4wd or control to the PCM.... just my take.

Actually, in all the discussion (this and the other thread).... the reference to fuse #10 has "evolved" or been "interpretted" in a number of ways... ie. 10 amp ... in my 96 drawing, its a 7.5 amp fuse.... even Mr Kennedy here only refers to a "10 amp fuse" so again its not totally clear.

PS. I further traced my steps back on this problem... in 96, the #10 fuse provides power to the GEM (on RUN).... looking further, the GEM switching this power to the 4W drive switch among other things... so there's the link, at least in 96 and according to one source.

Indeed, fuse #10 powers a whole lotta things:

Central Timer Module
Steering Rate Sensor
ARC Module (if equipped)
Central Timer Module/GEM module
Shift-lock Actuator
Brake Pressure Switch
Speed Control Servo/Amplifier Assembly
Compass/outside air temp module
Rear Integrated Control Panel
Lamp Out Warning Module
Rear Blower Motor Relay
Message Center.

The fact that it is an input to the GEM which, in turn, controls the 4wd tells me right there that it was the problem.

I hope Mr. Kennedy is still reading this thread. You have only potentially treated the symptom (ie. replacing the blown fuse)... what you really need to do is find the cause of the blown fuse (ie. what caused it to blow). The reason that I say this is of course the "Ford fire" switch... if it is your source for your problem then potentially you should be doing more than just replacing the fuse. Just a thought.

With everything that's hooked up to that circuit, a one-time occurrence is hardly an indication of a defective brake pressure switch. The odds are just as good that the GEM is shorting out, or the central timer module has gone south as the brake pressure switch.

FWIW, I have yet to hear of one failing on an Explorer. Not saying it can't happen, it would just be a first for me. If every fuse he sticks in there starts blowing, then yes, I'd start there for the troubleshooting, but one fuse doth not a trend make.
