Looked through all the forums but still have a couple of questions.
First off I have checked all the wirings I possibly can, fix one ground wire with a slight frey. I tapped on the transfer case motor, still nothing. When I push the test button on the rear control box I get a solid red light. When I push the 4X4 switch up front the rear control box clicks about 6 times then quits. I have manual hubs that are locked. Does this mean that the motor is bad or could it still be something else. I replaced the motor, still no 4X4. When I jump the brown wire, which I assume is a ground wire, to the frame it blows the 4X4 fuse. Also when I had the transmission rebuilt I had them check the motor, they stated there was no power to it. I can't find any other obvious wiring problems. This is on a 1994 explorer limited.

Thanks for your help the forums are a great resource and teaching tool.:us: :us:

i think it might br the motor. I read that if you switch it in to 4WD while moving, it ruins the motor!

Did you try disconnecting the connectors, clean and plug back in. Worked for me once. Also do a search there is a couple good write ups on the 4x4 mode not engaging.

I read that if you switch it in to 4WD while moving, it ruins the motor!

in the manual it says its ok to put it in 4auto when moving just not when the wheels are slipping, it says there may be a grinding noise but that is the 4x4 parts cathcing up to speed with the other and wont hurt anything. but...does it hurt to shift to 4wd when moving?

Yea. my fathers friend knows alot about the explorer/rangers, and he said hes seen alot of cases where the motor and something else wore after a while, and that it was bad to switch it on the fly. but i dont see and inconvience in switching it while ur stoped. plus, i have auto 4X4, which is GAY. and i dont know how to take it from auto to 2 hi and stil have 4X4. or else i would cause it can be annoying, and helpfull. but mostly annoying. But yes, i would not recomend switching it on the fly if you dont have to.

You can switch in and out of 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive HIGH while moving... not 4 wheel drive Low. Just follow the directions in the manual.

I would try the thread rebuild, but I also heard the shift motor is pretty cheap at autozone.

i shift mine from 2wd to 4auto when stopped mostly, its conveinet for city driving b/c its 2wd (better gas) but 4x4 when it slips, but sucks offroad. if i **** while moving i let off gas and put in neutral, and never when the wheels are slipping (say in manual). a shift motor from autozone is only $109.99....only

You are posting in a 1st gen forum 91-94.... As such it can be confusing/misleading for people when you refer to specific operation of other generation explorers.. So when referring to non 1st gen explorers you should prefacing your statements in this forum with "On my 2nd Gen", or "On my '96" etc. Just helps maintain the continuity of information... :)

Yea. that would help DeRocha, mines a second gen. auto 4X4, with the switch!

Any reason you just copied and pasted the same question from the top of the page?
Did you think no one would see it?

Thanks everyone for your help. Got the problem fixed. Not sure if it was cleaning the connection harness, tapping on the new motor, or just got another connection working right. Anyway thanks for all your suggestions. Lets hope it lasts.
