No 4x4

i got a 1992 ranger with a 4.0 and a 5 speed the 4x4 switch on the dash dont light up and it wont lock in. If i take the plug from the motor on the transfer case and hit it to a hot wire the motor works so its something before that and im stumped.

yea the 4x4 worked fine when i hot wired the motor. but when i put it back together it wont lock in with the switch. is there reay's, fuses, or control boxes that i need to check and how do i check them?
