Lack of Power

I have a 2000 XLT 5.0 AWD
and lately when I am driving at normal speeds and give it gas and have WOT the RPM's jump to 3k and stay there and the Explorer sounds loud but doesn't accelerate! any ideas would help
and one other thing when I deaccelerate ( with out applying the brakes ) once I get under 20 mph I hear a rolling clunk ??

I have a 2000 XLT 5.0 AWD
When I am driving at normal speeds there is a lack of power from either a rolling start or stopped .. when pushed to WOT the RPMs jump to 3K and stay there .. with no acceleration at all the engine sounds like it is pushing yet the vehicle just keeps going at the same speed as before I pushed it!
I have 70K miles and have kept up on maint. I have had the vehicle sense 30K! I have checked the breathing of the vehicle and all is good!

And now I have a rolling clunk sound when I deaccelerate ( WITH OUT applying brakes ) I am totaly lost on that one!
any help ?

This sounds like transmission or converter to me. Brain or Glacier can set you straight here.

Do they check this often ? I am going to Iraq and need to try and figure this out before I leave so that my wife can have a vehicle in working order.
thanks

Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? When was the last time the tranny was serviced - fluid/filter changed or flushed?

sorry I guess I should have put that in the first post
I changed in at 65K and everything was good , not to much shavings and nothing big! Also never had this problem before, always just had the delay and it would throw you back but not now! And nothing appears to be leaking from anywhere!

if you rev it any more does it respond or does it act like its in neutral.... i had the same problem... 1s and second would work fine but when i would get on it at about 50 it would neutral out.... turned out to be my direct clutch pack in the tranny was burnt up.... id say if its not accelerating at all its something not engaging or burnt up in the tranny... www.baumannengineering.com has some interesting articles as well as if you type 4r70w <---- tranny type into a search engine.... let me know if you find out what it is ... if it is a clutch pack the tranny has to be taken out and rebuilt.... not a total rebuild but it has to be taken all the way apart... dont mean to scare you as it could be alot of other stuff but this sounds like what i had.....
