I was on my way home from college about three hours away and after i had gotten home i went out to take my explorer somewhere and i had no clutch at all. It was very soft, and i could push it down with one finger. Furthermore when the clutch pedal was pushed to the ground i could not put it into any gear. When the car is turned off the clutch is still really easy to apply, but i can shift it into gears, and when i start it with it in gear it has trouble starting, but it will, than it will move, but i have no control over changing gears it is stuck in first, or reverse, i have not tried it in any other gear but i assume it would do the saem thing. The clutch does not affect anything, and is still soft. I can not take it out of gear eatherwhen i start it in gear, the only way to stop it is to shut off the car. I have a '91 xlt with about 180000 miles on it, and the clutch was replaced about 2 years ago........I hope all this makes sence, and i hope that someone out there can give me some advice.

Thanks,
Vic

Check the fluid level in your clutch fluid reservoir, fill it with brake fluid if it is low. You may have a bad clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder.
You will probably need to bleed the slave cylinder if you have air in the system. Check your Haynes manual for bleeding procedure. and check for any leaks in the system.

When you top off the clutch reservoir, there should be a rubber "sock" inside the reservoir. It's always amusing to see when someone has filled the sock with fluid and still can't get at least some pedal back...
