Hello!

I am hoping to find some help here on this trans problem we are having. Ihave a 99 Explorer XLT with automatic trans. About 6 months ago reverse stopped working. Due to job loss and no money it has sat for awhile with being fixed. I was told that i needed to replace the trans with a junkyard one and that would be the cheapest way out. I have finally got back to work and saved the money for a junkyard trans and had it replaced. Well I still have no reverse. The yard claims it to be good from a running Explorer and I have to agree that 2 trans having the EXACT same issue would be pretty slim. All of the forward gears are fine and it could be driven if I had to. Please can someone tell me if there are parts that are outside of the trans that can be causing my problem. I cant afford to pay to have another one removed and replaced.

Your trans is fully electronic, when you put the selector in reverse, the transmission range sensor tells the computer (PCM) that you selected reverse, the computer then applies the correct solenoids in the valve body and you get reverse. Possible causes for no reverse outside the trans. Did the junk yard trans come with the transmission range sensor switch or was your old one used? Does the wire plug that connects to that sensor snap into place or is the snap lock broken? Next is the solenoid plug contacts clean and properly connected? This plug is on driver side near the front of trans. Next would be to check the wires from those plugs to the computer for continuity, only the ones that are used for reverse need to be checked. Be sure to disconnect the battery and remove the plug from the computer before doing this. Last thing that I can think of is the computer may be bad, but not likely.

Brian, what did you find out about the REV issue?
