i have a 98 explorer and when i went to back uo i heard a slight clunk and now i have no reverse....all other gears are fine and drives fine.....just no reverse.....any solutions besides new tranny?
Sound like the reverse/low band is broken. That requires a full teardown but it is a reasonable and common repair. You may not need a new transmission, but the labor to do the R&R generally justifies doing a rebuild while everything is opened up. But that could depend on the maintenance history of the transmission, and of course the mileage.
