I have a 1997 Ford explorer xlt with the premium sound, I installed a new head unit, all functions are working but i have no sound now. I read in another thread that i must bypass the external amplifier but im not sure if this is true or if so where it is and how to do it NEED HELP ASAP please thank you.

if you are trying to use the Factory amp with your new headunit, you need to be using the preamp outs to the amplifier. You should be using this wire harness: Metra Electronics Corp. - 70-5603.

If you are using the standard wire harness, most the time it won't work.

Additionally, you need to connect the blue or blue/white wire to the amp power pin. This tells the amp to turn on when you turn on your radio.

Some radios, like alpines, have two seperate wires that turns on when the radio is on, and another when the CD player is on.

Whats the model Headunit you have? And what wire harness are you using?

I got a new Dual head unit but i just ended up bypassing the amp completely. Seems like i get better sound anyways. But thanks for the help

hmm.

Please take my suggestion. Please use your stock amplifier.

Dual isn't a very good quality brand. Thats why the lowest priced radios at Walmart are Duals.

Connect the speakers back to the amp, get the right wire harness, be happy that I saved you from horrible sound.

btw, what did you do to bypass the amp.

Well I think I am just going to go with a new amp for the door speakers and a second amp for my subs. I got a Dual and I know they are not the best of units but it was free from a friend so saves me some money...I should have taken my pioneer out of my jeep :(

And to bypass the amp i just disconnected the harnesses from the amp and spliced them together, I just made sure i left enough wire when I cut them i cut put them back if ever needed. sounds pretty good right now but i have crappy sound when there is a lot of bass, but that is probably due to the crappy blown original speakers...in the process of buying new ones online. Know of any good deals???
