No spark

Hi,

Recently my 1991 X just died when it was sitting idling while letting it warm up. It sounded like it would if you "shut the key off." Have checked the ignition module and it's good, have changed the crank trigger sensor and still no luck.
We put it on the MAC Tool diagnostic computer and all it would say was "Ignition Failure"

Any suggestions? I really need to get this running quickly. Would appreciate any comments.

What about the ICM module jus in front of the battery? Mine was going bad and my truck was hard to start. Not your problem but maybe failed altogether. I got another one from the junkyard as they are about 85 bucks new.

I guess I should have been more clear. I took the ICM module out and had it tested at O'Reilly's....it tested good...is there another module I should check? other then the "computer" module?

Have had people say it might be the coil pack? Thank you for your suggestion...I appreciate it greatly.

Well I guess the next thing to check would be the coil pack. I don't know the procedure, but I'm sure there is a write up somewhere. Also, just a stab in the dark, check all the fuses. There are some big bus fuses in the engine compartment next to the airbox, and the ones inside. Also just to clerify, when you say no spark, you actualy took the spark plug out and turned the motor over?

Go buy a haynes manual. There is a section in there on how to test the coil pack. Its on page 5-6. If you do not have access to one or cant find it let me know and I will type it up. Lots of good info in there.

What code did the Mac Tools scanner tell you meant "ignition failure" (not that I care whether you used a scan tool or a paper clip to pull the codes)? Which test(s) passed (or does the Mac Tools scanner not note pass codes)?

My son (19) and my ex had put it on the Mac diagnosic machine and he says that it just stated "ignition failure" did not give a code number or tell what tests it did pass....I don't know anything further...it had been at my ex's house for my son to drive and it just died. I finally had them haul it over to our place on a flatbed trailer so don't have access to the tester now....sorry I couldn't answer this question....thanks for the input though.

I guess my best option is to take it to a dealer and have them check it out...then decide if I want to sink that much money into fixing it..

its probibly the coil pack, if you were closer id let you borrow one as i have a couple for testing purposes.


when your checking for spark how are you doing it, pulling a wire off the coil an seeing if it is sparking or what

You don't need a Mac tools tester to pull codes. See tests at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html If you don't have a voltmeter or test light, just hook up a paper clip form STI to SIG RET as indicated, and watch the check engine light flash.
