Wondering how common a noisy lifter would be on a '07 4.6 Limited with 110K km on it. Clatters away for a few minutes then goes away. I have a Ford Premium Care program on the vehicle. I guess I better bring her in.

I think I may also have a front driver side bearing starting to go as well. I assume these are a common repair as well.

I am not sure about the lifter but the wheel bearings in these trucks are crap, seem to be a problem, i had to change the front drivers side a month ago truck only had 78000 kilometers on it.

I also have a noisy lifter, just for bit when first started. Mine started doing this @ 25k miles, Ford said nothing to worry about, I told them put their money where their mouth is and got a 100k mile engine warranty. 90k on the vehicle now and, knock on wood, no issues.

valve lash noise theres a tsb to fix it.

Using a oil filter with the bypass valve helps. Pretty common in the 4.6 and 5.4.

using a non motor craft filter will void most engine warranty. esp for engine noise.

As will using anything other than 5W20 oil.

Ford of Canada (dealers) use regular dino oil.

Ford in the US (dealers) use synthetic oil.

Have you checked the exhaust manifolds? They tend to crack over time on the Explorer and make a nice ticking noise during cold start up. Replaced the passenger side allready, now the drivers side needs replacing. Have 109K on engine.

Curious about that exhaust manifold cracking. I have an 06' Explorer Limited 2x4 4.6 v-8 all stock, and have noticed ticky noises since I bought the truck in 2009 then over time it's turned into a exhaust leak sound but fades as engine warms up for the most part, but is intermitant when warm too? WTF? Front right passenger side...,..any sugestions on how to catch this gremlin?????

my dads 04 f-150 with the 4.6 has had lifter tick since the day he drove it off the lot. It now has 155,000 and the sound hasent gotten louder or quieter.

Explorer was making loud ticking noises when cold that went away as car warmed up. I used a stethascope to listen to it and it was the exhaust manifold where the noise was coming from. After fighting with 2 very rusted bolts, the manifold did have a very nice crack in it. When replaced, the sound went away. Now the drivers side is making that ticking sound. Here goes another weekend.
I first thought it was the lifters also.

Mine too

My 2007 4.6 with 47,000 miles has what sounds like an exhaust leak from the passenger side. It only makes the sound at cold start up and only for 30-40 seconds at the most. I'm going to make a call tomorrow and see about getting it in. I really hope it is the manifold and not the timing chain...

Passenger side manifold

It was the passenger side manifold. Replaced under the 5yr/60,000mile warranty.

That's great that you got it done under warranty.
My Ex now has 110k miles so no warranty for me.

Answers to original post...

Winner is exhaust leak. Whew. Exhaust manifold gasket replaced. Also, 2 broken studs removed and replaced.

Second problem was wheel bearing. Both problems covered with Premium Service Plan ($100 deductable). Glad I purchased that so far. But it expires June 2012 or the next 20K Km. Will have to get my money's worth!

Thanks for all the posts. Always good to know what the problem really was for others to take note.

;)

RS manifolds warp and the studs break which is very common on 4.6L.
