Now that my brand spankin' new Eddie Bauer arrived I'd like to hear tips from those of you willing to share your secrets.

I've got most of the chemicals, cleaners and waxes I'll need, what I want to find out is how you guys work on the roof (or other hard to reach areas) of the Explorer when washing/waxing.

Do you just stand on the rear bumper and/or running boards, or do you have or use other techniques?

Also, please feel free to list any tools/aids you feel are necessary to get the job done.

Many thanks.

I use a small step ladder to reach the roof.

What kind of "wax" do you plan to use?

Al,

Thanks. I'm sure I'll try the Zaino in the future since it sounds awesome, but for now I'll use the Meguiar's Gold Class that I have.

On the step ladder, I was thinking about that but didn't think it would put you close enough to the vehicle to be effective.

It'll be great to hear everyone's thoughts.

I suggest you really try the Zaino and you will pitch that "other stuff".

Good luck... shine on....

I always use a stepladder to get to the roof of mine. Works great.

If you're thinking about getting a buffer, get the Porter Cable 7424 from www.coastaltools.com. It's widely known as the best orbital you can buy.

I would highly recommend getting some Zaino and using it now. When you decide to get it in the future, you're just going to have to strip off all that Meguiars anyway.

I just have a long carwashing brush on a stick to get the roof.. as far as waxing.. I dont have a clue..

sometimes when Im REALLY **** i climb on the roof of the car and wash.wax it.. just be sure to keep your feet on the roof rack bars.. never had a dent/scratch problem yet.

Thanks, gents.

I may need to pick up something to lengthen my reach with the mitt.

when washing, just stand on the running boards if you have them. for the back, stand on the tire. works for me. when waxing, i usually open the front door and stand on the floorboard, and on the tire for the back. hope that helps.

I picked up a two-step plastic step stool by Rubbermaid at Walmart for about $8.50. (Part #4202)

It's 16" high and provides good support despite its light weight, making it easy to move around (and hose off afterward).

The design is good for working with the Explorer since the part nearest the vehicle is essentially vertical letting you lean in closer than an "A" framed folding ladder or step stool would.

Now I just have to work on the motivation to do the "heavy" work beyond mere washings and QD.
