Take it to a reputable shop that can read tranny codes. It can be a number of things.

Get her scanned by the dealer.

My truck needed a new Torque converter and solenoid in tranny to fix the two pulled codes. Total for repairs was over 2k (luckely covered by warranty).

It can be a valve body issue too.

get it in n get it scanned then get it fixed. w/o the codes it can be any number of reasons as to why its flashing.

dont go to the dealer u will get ripped off. the dealer usually wants 1.5 times or double what a small reputable shop would charge to do the same job.

im getting my tranny rebuilt for 1400. parts labor tax everything.

I didn't mean get it fixed by the dealer, just get the dealer to scan it.
Get it fixed someplace you can trust will do it right. Don't go for price, because a bad job will cost you in the long run.

the dealer will still rape u on the diagnostic fee.

NO, you just go in and ask for the scan to pull the codes. You will get the diagnostics fee of one hour, even though it takes minutes. By me it is $108. I think its worth it since the dealer will be able to tell you exactly what the codes are.

If you can find a shop that can pull the codes from the transmission and then tell you whats wrong for cheaper or free, go for it.

I took my truck to a shop once for the transmission (had some questions) and the first thing they said was "you need a rebuild" for $1600 bucks. My transmission only failed recently after 2 years since that quote.

Just be wary of "everyone". Get the codes pulled and do your research on who will do a better job and what kind of warranty their work carries.

I know the dealer is expensive. My work was done under extended warranty, but the dealers work is warrantied for a year. If I did not have the warranty My transmission would probably have spent some time on my living room floor until I could replace the parts myself...lol

by me the dealer is getting $180+ for diagnostic.

YIKES!

That is a rip off. Putting the car on a scanner to pull codes takes minutes. They charge one hour ($108) for any scan. It used to be $75 a hour a year ago.

wow-dealers are starving.
For the price of two trips to the stealer you can buy software for a laptop that will do the same thing. All codes Ford Enhanced codes, ABS, Trans, ETAC, and of course OBDII.
Best tool i ever bought for the Ford.

i have had it read twice now and they say there is no code so what does that mean?

it means that u got either a moron looking at it. or they arent communicating with the transmission.

forget the dealers!!

I had the same problem with my 02 explorer xlt and a friend of mine scanned it with a computer he bought at walmart for like $40. gave me the exact code and finding the part online was the hardest part. once you have the codes you can look them up on here. good luck but do it fast because depending on how serious your problem is you could be doing more and more serious damage everytime you put it into drive since o/d light flashing is a sign of transmission malfunction.

true.

Also, like others said, do not drive it until you get it fixed, as continued operation can make a repair worse.

Didn't want to start another thread (newbie mistake), so my search came up with this one.

I just spent $3000 for a transmission for the very same problem the OP had, I needed a torque convertor, some sensor and a rebuild kit @ 79000 kms (~ 50 000 miles)
Wife drove it a couple of days like this before bringing it to a "trans. specialist" and probably made it worst. Very surprised at how much it cost, is this amount too excessive?

Apparently this is a common problem???

53,000 miles on an '04 paid $1600 for mine, quoted anywhere from 1600-3200 (3200 was for a Ford rebuilt). Some have had no problems, very hard to say. Note posters that use this may board may have the trans failing, or put it this way if your truck is running fine most people don't search the web for 'potential problems'.
On mine a snap ring broke inside which cause a lot of internal damage about $800 in parts alone.
