Just wanted to say that I finally got some real world use out of these headers(OBX).
Had to pull my '01 ranger out of ditch and it did great. No problem and I was a bit over zealous and kept pulling after it was out. My friend was on the brakes in the ranger and I just kept pulling it uphill. I have no reservations that I could pull most anything if I needed too. Engine took real well to the Pennzoil 10w-40, seems to have more power with that.
Got slightly over 21 MPG Highway. 21 MPG scanguage, AND 21.01 hand calculated over 125 miles highway only. Tires were at 35 PSI with three people totaling ~610 LBS. Best I saw before was 17 something, tires were at 30-32 PSI then.
Now I did use pure 87 gasoline. I dont buy ethanol garbage. Cruise control was used 95% of the time set at speed limit.
I think 21 MPG is pretty damn good for a V8 AWD ~4800(including people) pound brick.

No, it would be almost impossible to find someone where I am to even tune it.
I did have a canned SCT tune on it but it didn't seem to do much so I took it off.

Put that tune back in it to try. Programming can release more power if it moves the A/F ratio closer to ideal.

Ill try it. Kind of wish I had the time and resources to properly tune it but thankfully the headers are just so much better they show instant improvement.
Went a few miles off road yesterday up some steep hills and on the way down the front brakes started fading and I smelled them burning. I then went down in first gear but maybe the duralast gold pads are not exactly the best. Had rotors and pads replaced maybe 8 months ago with less than 1000 miles on em. I guess it is hard on the front brakes with some 4400 pounds pushing on them downhill.
Just another excuse to upgrade more I guess.

So, given your initial calculations, you're gonna get another 75-100 miles per tank, correct? If that's the case, these things will pay for themselves in gas pretty quick.

Yes, something like 80 miles extra per tank. Of course that would only be highway driving but thats what I mostly do. Just drove some 250 miles yesterday and it was right about ~21 MPG.

If what was said earlier they will be available around the end of this month. Although I noticed they are now listed for $1,300 on ebay which is insane.

I have a set of Ford Racing - Ford Motorsport Headers (no longer made - very rare) that are specifically for the 5.0 Liter V8 2nd Generation Ford Explorer which I might consider selling.

Does anyone know if changing headers affect your SMOG eligibility in California? Or another way to ask, are the TMH and OBX headers CARB approved/compliant?

According to the Torque Monster website - http://www.torquemonsterheaders.com/introduction.html - they are CARB approved.
I doubt OBX has done their homework since many have stated they just copied TMH's design.

I am not sure if the Ford Motorsports headers are CARB approved. I think I remember reading that they were but can't say for certain.

Low quality steel+heat+a little tension due to imperfect fitment. What caused that?
