Hey all. New to the Explorer Forum, not new to explorers though. Been a member on TRS for a short while also as I previously owned a ranger but just got rid of it.

Well enough of my intro and on to my question.
To start my X is a 99 XLT 5.0 AWD lifted 3" body and 2 inch tt/shackle. (anyfurther info needed just ask) My question is, when ever I turn to the left at any speed I hear a loud cluck that sounds like something is shifting under the chassis. I have inpected EVERYTHING but cant find anything loose. What could this possibly be? Also I have recently just replaced everything in the front end due to wear and tear, example: upper+lower control arms(both sides), new swaybar and links, new hubs and cv shafts and new brakes. Im lost for what this sound could be, I figured it would be a ball joint but none are loose. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Josh

Welcome to the forum! To answer your question I'm going to ask a few more lol. Is it only to the left? at what speeds do you hear the clunk? Does it happen going over a bump? Besides the lift what have you replaced recently?

"You need a new front drive shaft most likely"

You talking the prop shaft or the shaft in the diff?

"at what speeds do you hear the clunk? Does it happen going over a bump? Besides the lift what have you replaced recently?"

Generally it clunks anywhere from a crawl to 30mph. Everything that I have replaced is in my first post. Essencially I have replaced the entire front end except the diff and crossmember. Going into turns it does it like 9 out of 10 times to the left and very rarely (like 1 out of 20) to the right. Every so often it does it over a speed bump to, but very rarely.

Yes, I was referring to the front prop shaft, connecting the transfer case to the front differential.

You could look yours over real well, usually this means removing it. Look for a tear in the small cv boot.

Don't just go replacing it because I mentioned it as suspect. Check it out first.

:D

Other things to suspect,

Transmission mount, transfer case, Unit bearing (hub) assembly

Another question out of the blue-
are all the tires same size and brand? Different brands of the same size may have different revolutions per mile, which could affect the AWD operation. Worn tires on one axle with fresh on the other would also cause this to occur.

Just thought I would ask.

I have inspected that but thanks for the mention. I am starting to suspect some sort of mount though.

The tires are all brand new about 200 miles on them and all are matching 33x12.50r15 Mickey Thompson ATZ's. I wouldnt have been able to hear any noises with how my last tires wore so bad. The X sounded like a helicopter coming down the road.

The 99 doesnt have radius arms. The front of this is IFS with torsion bars.

So a really late update... one of the lower ball joints that I had put in was deffective. It didnt have the side to side slop but up and down slop hence the reason I never noticed it. I now have a tight front end with no noises and a truck that tracks true down the road once again, gotta love life time alignments from firestone.
