I have this odd noise coming from my 1999 sport 4x4. Whenever I seem to slow down, or take off again after slowing down I get this mid to low sound that almost sounds like a boat horn or a train wistle. I really dont know how else to describe it. I feel like its coming from the brake system, but I guess it could be the suspension. I replaced the rear pads which weren't worn down thinking that it was coming from the back, but now I fear its coming from the front. Anyone have any idea what would cause this? I first started hearing it when I would hit a bump at low speeds and it would squeek on and off as if something was riding up and down in the rear of the vehicle. However I am also obviouslly on the brake at this time so I am not sure.

try test

Does it only do it braking? Then could be ABS or pads.

Does it go away when turning left or right? Then its a front hub.

Check your wheel bearings

Howdy

Check your wheel bearings. I have a Ranger that happened to. It started when I would hit a bump or make a sharp turn. Would make a squeeling noise and finally turned into a roaring noise after a a cpl months. Finally the front right wheel started vibrating. I found the bearing housing had cracked and the bearing wore the spindal down and was making the noises. Catch it early so you will not have to do a lot of parts replacing. Hope this helps.

about how much would that run to fix?

The Bearing itself shouldnt be more than 25 or 30 bucks. If you do it yourself its a Pretty easy job to just replace the bearings. If the spendal has been damaged then that is another story. I got a spendal from the junkyard for around $20 and done the job myself ,but it is a job to replace - unless you have mechanical experience. First thing would be to jack the truck up and check each tire to see if you can woble tires with your hands, If the tires dont woble back and fourth like they are loose then the spendle is more than likely fine. If you have one that is loose then its time to check bearings & spendal. If all tires seam tight then Unless I found that the noise is something else I would definatly check the bearings Next.
Hope this helps

Like a foghorn?...Dogfriend did a video thread called "The IAC goes Woooo", do an advanced search and you should find it. Listen to it, sounds like it might be your situation - and you can compare the sound!

Aww heck, here's a link, just as fast as making you hunt for it.

The "happens when braking" probably means it is not this problem, but it sure "sounds" like it.
