The box has finally given me the bird ...
no forward gears
had £120 charge for not having full recovery (through privilege insurance) for a tow home 4Hrs inc M25 delays...
good news is I have another gearbox coming ,that I got this morning from Chris (good timing mate)
and a van to run round in for two weeks
she,s given me plenty of warning though ,
got some big ramps coming and some help from a mate who has worked on lots of 4x4s :notworthy
gotta get it done before the fair !

thx man
...start loosening up all the bolts today...
something tells me I might get an oily keyboard

youll have to cover it with clingfilm first then lol,and if your like me i always wear old jeans that dont fit (bigger)and not wear a belt my boxers end up with more oil than on the car by the time ive finished pulling them up.anyway at least the weathers ok for getting underneath:)

good advise man ....
fortunately I have a nice set of overalls from work but I'm sure the oil will follow me in somehow...

There's no need to remove the RH exhaust manifold. If those bolts are really stiff, it's easy to break off the heads, so I would leave well alone.

Providing that you have removed the disptick tube and the gearbox mounting rubber block, then the transmission will drop through the aperture. Tap out the short dipstick extension to make access to the cooling pipes' nuts a bit easier.

If you are working on the floor, you may even find the job easier (!) if you leave the transfer box connected. It also means that you can leave the rear prop connected to the transfer box, because those bolts are a real sod to undo.

Top tip: The rear diff flange has extra holes in it. Poke a 1/4 drive extension through one of these to hold the prop firm when you undo the bolts (12mm 12pt socket here)

Sorry, I meant RH exhaust down pipe!

Duncan

what could i do to prep the manifold bolts if i wanted to install racing headers?

Best of luck Rich I hope you get her sorted

:)Thank you Duncan for the help/tips ,
I wasn't sure if it would fit through that gap,so Ive undone the manifold at the head so theres room to move it about a little ,
the main exhaust is undone (that was seriously hard to remove, also proper rusted )and the coolant pipes access is a big help, they look a bit chewed up so this box has been off before.
Ill leave thoose transfer case to rear diff bolts then for ron,
those back rear diff bolts look nasty too ,really dry, Ive soaked em today
thanks again All,

Hey Rich, just had an idea.
Why not unbolt the body off the chassis and take it off? Hey presto, you can get at everything.lol.:D:D

Kev dont m8, man Ive been undoing shocks and getting all weird about all of the wonders of the arc shocks etc ,trying to remove the rear exhaust...straight up it wont fit through looks like its staying
must get the bugger apart and back together pronto....
electrics/cables to disconnect tomorrow

soz mate, only trying to keep you smiling in your hour of need.....
don't suppose you have access to a compressor and an impact wrench?... blow torch?....

the old trans is out and the new back in although theres still a gap to be closed up bewteen engine/box hopefully the right size bolts will sort it as the 98 5r55e has thicker case /bolt holes and the ones I have for the 97 are too short ...hope its going to fit together....
I had to do it twice allready because the inner input shaft wasnt in right !st time (my fault)
knackered but making progress

now i get what you mean by working flat out to get to ford fair .......... im keeping everything crossed for you mate

did you lube the input shaft ?
