ranger an explorer shackles are different. from the dealer they about $30 each cdn, best to call a dealer in your area to price them

Jesus, is that how most of your vehicles look like? (for the people in the lower 48)

Not in the Southeast (the areas not on the coast). I think it's the winter sand and salt road treatments that chew up so many Northern vehicles. Both my 93's have underbodies that don't look too different from when they left the dealership.

We don't use the salt here in the Pacific Northwest either. We don't have the rust problem like that unless they spend there whole life on the beach.

The other option is a Warrior 5.5" shackle (not the war-153 which is 8.5" long). I don't remember the p/n but they have one. The question will be does it come is 13mm or 14mm bolt holes.

The explorer uses 14mm. I have an early war-153 that came with 13mm so the shackle bolt moves around some in the spring bushing but I've had no issue with that for well over 150k miles.

The WAR123 are the shorter ones which fit and give about 1/4-1/2" lift, perfect for fixing the sagging rear end, even better if you swap the leaf springs side to side.

Unfortunately, they are made for a Jeep YJ, and so they are 1/2" holes which need to be drilled out to 9/16" for 14mm bolts. You'll also have to supply the Grade 8 14mm bolts and self-locking nuts, which are easy enough to get an an ACE or other hardware store.

A replacement stock pair might be all that's needed if you can get some from someone on the site for cheap, otherwise the WAR123's through Desert Rat are probably less expensive..if you want to drill holes and buy hardware.

well i got my new shackles today, 43$ shipped, they will give a little bit of lift, these are the ones i posted earlier... i dont mind that they lift because i always have at least 300lbs+ of crap in the back of my X. what you guys think? Yea I gotta go to the hardware store sometime this week, i need Grade 8, 14mm bolts with self locking nuts right? anything else?

Here in the NW we don't get that much snow, but when we do only sand is used. I still got burned once buying a car that had originally been in the NE.
It had a sprayed on undercoat that protected it, but was not on the floor above the gas tank. When the pump went out I discovered a bunch of rust, including the fuel line fittings.

When you buy used, the advice to avoid night and rain is good, but also do a carfax to see where it came from, especially these days when there have been a lot of floods.

what shackles are thos?

my War-153 have 1/2" holes (I got one of the first ones, before they (warrior)relized they were drilling the holes the wrong size). I never redrilled mine. I'm running 1/2" bolts. I know the spring moves around some on the bolt but its never bothered me enough to fix it.

[hijack]Do you know if Warrior has a shackle that is 4.5" to 5" long for a jeep? (same width, shoter length)[/hijack]

Which shackles are those? The WAR153? If so, they already come drilled with the right 14mm bolts for Explorers. BUT...don't put them on a stock ride that isn't lifted in front!!! They are TOO LONG and as soon as you pop them on and drop the weight of the vehicle on the rear springs, they WILL flatten out the leafs, and will NEVER return to normal. Also, the weight of the gas tank and the inherent lean of the Explorer WILL cause the left front tire to wear funny (and fast!) with the rear jacked up so much. I drove from Denver to Vegas with the WAR153's on, no lift in front, and by the time I got back, the outside shoulder of the front drivers side tire was almost BALD. Do what you want, but this is free advice from someone who's been there. I highly suggest you get the WAR123's if keeping the front stock height, or just get factory shackles.

I would re-drill the holes and use 14mm hardware. I know Gerald ran his with 13mm's for a long time too, but I don't like the idea of the bolts being pressured at the ends of the eyelet sleeves when the rear is really flexing, rather than the pressure being spread out over the length of the bolt when they are a nice snug fit. Using poly bushings compared to the flexy rubber probably puts even more of the twist from the springs on the bolts. I re-drilled my WAR123's before they even touched the truck. Even grade 8 hardware isn't made to take force on such a small part of the bolt. It may never happen, but the risk of having a bolt shear off isn't worth the few dollars for a few bolts and maybe a 9/16" bit.

Warrior makes the WAR150 for the same application, which is apparently 4" long, going by the assumption stock YJ shackles are 3" long so the WAR123 (at 5.5" long) gives 1.25" of lift, and the WAR150 gives 0.50" of lift. Performance Accessories makes the PER0340 shackles which gives a YJ 1" of lift, and so would be 5" long. If you're trying to get as close to the stock Explorer shackles as possble, I still say the WAR123 is where it's at. the 1/4-1/2" of lift is perfect for an X with gear to keep the rear from sagging.
