Hey y'all,

Went to start my '99 RWD with the 4.0 OHV at work today, no movement in the starter at all. Banged it with a hammer and drove away happily, so that's all the diagnosis I really think I need to do. I already had a reman Motorcraft starter sitting in the garage for the inevitable day I'd have to do this.

I was looking around the forum for a walkthrough and was wondering if there are any, or if there are any tips on doing the job. It doesn't look tough especially since I've got no 4x4 stuff to worry about. But I've learned my lesson about doing my homework before digging into a job, no matter how simple...

Lots of em on You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=starter+replacement+98++ford+explorer+OHV

on sohc at least its not too hard if you dont have 4wd. pretty straightforward imo

disconnect the negative battery terminal FIRST otherwise you can make some large sparks, the large red wire goes directly to the battery

otherwise this is very straight forward

On my 95 it was s little tricky. Did not have slot of clearance too get at the power cable. After two or three times replacing. The thing I learn
1. never used a remain starter
2. as they disconnect the negative battery cable. Unbolt the starter, pull it out of the fly wheel housing and turn it up so the starter terminals are facing down and disconnect them. Them I slip thru the space between the exhaust and engine. I got it down to 45 minutes. The first time it was 3 days. I also pickup some new tools. Ratchet wrenches, a Ratchet that you spin the handle and the head turns. Stanley made them for walmart, Lowes and Homedepot) I don't see anymore.
I am impress that the hammer trick worked. Next month I have too replace a starter on one of car. I now have anything to do the replacement. I don't know how long will the hammer trick will work for? It has too be reliable all time for me.
