On top of that shopping bag idea - take a philips head screwdriver and puncture the bottom oil filter a few minutes before you spin it off. This will drain almost all of the fluid inside the filter.
This is especially helpful for large engines (like the Super Duty diesel engines) since such filters hold about a quart of oil and is very cumbersome to balance after it has been unscrewed if its still full.
