My oil gauge started flickering and would just drop below oil pressure then flicker and stop in the middle and would seem fine after that. It did this every now and then now it completely doesnt work. Is this a common thing with ex? Ive never had this issue in any other vehicle i have ever had.

oil gauge going crazy.

Replace the oil sender first. If that does not fix it... read below 
If it does it at idle when the engine is warm, that is because of low oil pressure. Usually you will hear some extra engine noises at that point.
Next time try to put it in "N" when it does that see if it stops (in "N" rpm's will increase a little).
Fix? Welcome to the club. Probably engine/camshaft bearings are shot. Or oil pump suction screen clogged up. Or both...
