The recommended oil for the Explorer 4.6 is 5w20. Will I damage anything if I were to use 5w30 instead?

Nope, The 4.6 2 valve was originally spec'd for 5w30. But, there is really no advantage to using 5w30 over 5w20. Heck, I use 0w20 in my 4.6 07 Mustang GT.

Good to know. The reason for the question is this: I keep finding Mobil1 in the big jugs on sale in 5w30. 5w20 only comes in the 1 liter bottles. So when there is a sale the 5w20 is 2x the price of 5w30. $45 vs $90 is a helluva lot of money. Thanks for the reply!!

same here, the big 5w30 jugs cost 30$ on special at Canadian Tire whereas the 5w20 comes in 1l format.

btw: a few people have mentioned to me that although 5w30 is fine; 10w30 can actually make your mil come on, apparently this is due to the higher viscosity...

I know over in the States, we can get Motorcraft 5w-20 at Wal-Mart for like $14.00 USD for a 5 quart jug... Is there a Wal Mart near you? Might check it out...

Amsoil is about the best possible oil to buy, it runs about $9 a quart with shipping and taxes. IMO, the Mobil and other common synthetics are only worth about $4 a quart in total.

Actually, I used to think the same but I recently took a course with a local UOA lab and was shown results from various oils found on the market. It was interesting to see that indeed Amsoil is tops from start to finish, good base, good additives, uniform viscosity etc. Mobile 1 synthetic comes in second, there might also exist an Esso branded synthetic just as good but costing less because its not "mobile 1".

For those using Royal Purple, its actually a blend of different types of similar property oils, they die it purple in order to mask the real color of the oil (since the blend isn't always the same, its tint changes as well) die it purple and no one's the wiser!!!

(true confession - I use 0W-20 in my 4.6L V8)
