OK, Dumb question..

I have a 1998 Explorer XLT. A friend of mine is putting a new transfer case in it. Im not sure if it is considered AWD or 4x4. The switch on the dash gives me the options of AUTO/4wd HI/4wd LO, so since it doesnt have a 2wd option that makes it AWD, right?

more than likely its 4 x 4. i have awd and have no dash buttons for anything.

It's a 4x4 , you need a BW 4405 transfer case from another 98 and up,,
it houses a transfer case clutch. This clutch , which is controlled by the ECM, and engages the 4x4 as the tires slip as read by the abs sensors,,
