I just blew my left rear speaker with my new HU so I decided to take the door panel off. I realized that the speaker was a 5x7 and not a 6x8. I have heard that a 5x7 and a 6x8 are the same but how? I just dont understand!

The opening in an Explorer is made to fit a 5x7 or 6x8. A 5x7's mounting allows it to fit in a 6x8 slot, and a 6x8 fits in a 6x8 slot... Sounds odd but it works :)

here's a 5x7

This is a pic of some MB Quart DKD 157s, i put these in my doors all around, plus i am going to run components.

If you look, at a factory 6x8 speaker the mounting holes are very tight to the speaker, on a 5x7, the brackets extend out...therefore it can fit in the standard ford 6x8 slot cause the mounting brackets extend far enough.

look at the pic you'll understand.

here's a pic of some Pioneer 6x8 3-ways, these actually say on the speaker that their a factory fit for Ford/Mazda Vehicles.

Hope this helps...

They are pretty much interchangeable.

JT,

I am always impressed when someone includes photos like you did with their messages. It helps get a better idea of what someone is describing.

Does a person have to be pretty computer literate to include the professional photos like you did in their message or is their a simple procedure to it???

Not really, i am just bored at work, so i felt like thoroughlly explaining it, i always like to include some type of pic to make it easy, not all of us have seen a 5x7 up close to a 6x8, i just went to mbquarts website, and found pics of my speakers, and i went to crutchfield and found pics of those pioneers, anyone can include images, its part of the Bulletin board tags,

there is an IMG button you can click when writing a response or starting a thread to include pics, basically its an easy way of inserting an img tag

Regards..

Thank you for your help. Now I understand what people are talking about!

In general, you're trying to get a speaker with the largest cone possible, as it has the most surface area to move air and create bass. There are other factors, such as how far the cone moves, how much power, etc. but with the Pioneer of the same series and materials, you're comparing oranges to oranges, so try and get the 6x8 if possible.

Personally, I'm not a fan of oval woofer cones. I've never liked the mid-range sound from one. I run 5 1/4 JBL Components in both sets of doors. I'm more into detail than thump though.
