No problem.

We are glad to help and glad to have you here.

Don't be shy about reading other post, commenting and asking questions if you have any.

The only stupid question is the one not asked.

If I check the Arkansas craigslist for you and find some differentials and or wheels and tires is this something you would be interested in doing?
There are LOTS of 3.73 front and rear axles out there for you from stock trucks, both diffs should be around $400 or so and will bolt in. Now when you bolt them in there will be parts that need to be changed probably, like brakes, hubs, seals, fluids, etc
Are you up for this?

Or

Should we help you find some smaller stock like wheels and tires?

You know this forum will tell you what is logical to do, and then they will tell you what WE would do. MOST members here LOVE a lifted sport...so going to a smaller tire and removing lift is almost like committing a sin LOL

Either way your local craigslist is the best place to start. After that we could call some local wrecking yards and find the parts you need easily! Might even be able to find some 4.10 diffs. Heck I have a 4.56 front differential downstairs I have been dragging around for years.....

I like to consider ALL options, life is about making choices. I do have a couple of other things i am committed to putting $ in at present, but my wife has developed an interest in our new to us "cute truck" so who knows.
Meanwhile, I would like to know about smaller tires for the wheels now on the ex.
i think they are approx 10 x 15. thanks, jmc

Save the VSS gear your removing. If you change tire size, your going to want to change that gear again to correct the speedo. Gear teeth is going to depend on which tires you choose.

Tire suppliers will give a suggested wheel width for the tires you choose. This doesn't mean you have to buy them, just use it as a resource for shopping, new or used. ;)

I have a huge jar of speedo gears I have collected over the years......very handy to have around.

Those wheels are likely 10" deep, if they were 8" wheels the 12.5 wide 33's would look smooshed. (I have run 33x12.5 on 8" wheels and 10" wheels, his look to be 10")

I will check your local Craigslist (Arkansas) and see what we can help you find!

This guy is parting a couple of Gen I 4x4
Hes in OK, not sure how far from you in Arkansas?
Your local CL does not have much for Gen I rangers or explorers!

Call this guy and see how much he wants for the front and rear differentials or axles from one of these trucks

I called and left a msg. I also sent an email. I asked about the gears ratio. and price. what else do I need to ask him? year? model, etc? thank you jmc

you got it covered!
Price for front and rear differentials, dana 35 TTB setup along with the rear drum brake rear axle from a 91-94 explorer (Gen I explorer) 4x4
These will bolt in to your sport

In 95-01 explorer changed to a different IFS setup and they do not interchange (gen II explorer)

Most 4x4, 4 door explorers have 3.73 and many have limited slip. Some have 4.10's which would be really nice with 33's

If he is not sure what gears he has ask for a picture of the door sticker...from the axle code we can decipher what gears each parts truck has!

didn't hear back as yet, but will stay on it, he is 194 miles from me. jmc

Springfield MO isn't to far from you. There is always Explorers available there for sale cheap, and the salvage yards there are a good source for parts.
For example: I seen a 91 manual Explorer on Craigs List today, 30 mins north of there selling for $500.

Little Rock should have some decent yards as well.

I can help offset the price by purchasing your front 3.27s if it ends up happening lol

thank you i will check those out. jmc

The rear axle would be and it would be an upgrade from drum brakes to disc brakes but would also require changing the brake master cylinder. The proportioning is a little different for the disc.

The mirrors and some interior bits and pieces but not the front differential. The TTB in the 91-94 has reverse cut ring and pinion. You will need to find a 91-94 donor or by the gears and have them installed.

Stick with 91-94 explorer, should not be too hard to find the front diff and rear axle at a wrecker near you, they sold ALOT of these trucks

found this. will gears work?

8.8 axel housing - $50

8.8 axel with 410 gear no axels ...kept in in garage make an offer came out of ford explorer disc breaks...

It would work, but since the axles are missing, it is going to be some work to put back together. Going to need both axles, C-clips, and I would install new axle bearings & seals while they are out. Also would install a new E-brake kit. Need both calipers, and rotors, as they are different then yours are. With those, comes new soft lines. This stuff can add up fast.

I would ask the seller why the axles are missing, and if it was used for anything other than street. Just need to make sure it isn't a bent housing, or twisted tubes from abuse. He might have just needed the axles for another housing, and it's fine, but I would ask to be safe.

I was thinking i could just put the gears on my axles in my diff. not do the entire rear that possible?

Yes & no. You have to change the pinion gear as well, and that means having the backlash set professionally. It's not a simple swap of the carrier.

Then your going to have to get the front gears done to match.
